Another Amazing PTX Christmas Album!Last year I was introduced to Pentatonix, aka PTX, when my mom asked for their album, That's Christmas to Me, for Christmas. Admittedly, I'd been living under a rock while raising twin toddlers so I really didn't know much about any newer artists. After my mom mentioned them, I realized they were also one of the groups featured in Pitch Perfect 2, the second of the movies about competitive collegiate a capella groups. I listened to That's Christmas to Me and loved it so imagine my excitement when I saw that they recently released a new Christmas album! Needless to say, I immediately ordered it.A Pentatonix Christmas contains 11 songs and is approximately 34 minutes long so it's fairly short but it's packed full of beautiful Christmas songs, both traditional and contemporary. I love traditional Christmas carols and PTX rocks it with their renditions of "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "Up on the Housetop." One of my favorite Christmas songs is Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and, while PTX sings a fun, jazzed-up version of the song, I still prefer the original (but that's just me). There is a beautiful version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and I really enjoyed hearing "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays," a remake of 'N SYNC's popular Christmas song. The other songs on the album are very enjoyable as well and I have listened to this album all the way through a couple times already! If you are looking for some new Christmas music for this holiday season, I'd highly recommend purchasing this album. I think it's as good as That's Christmas to Me even though this one is fairly short. In a few weeks, when we start decorating for Christmas, wrapping presents, and making cookies, I will be jamming around the house to this album! I bought the CD version and when the booklet is unfolded, there is a poster of Pentatonix on one whole side too. I'm pleased with my purchase and can't wait to listen to it as the Christmas season gets closer!5Another Christmas, another Pentatonix CD.My wife and son LOVE this group! So buying it was a no-brainer. Another Christmas, another Pentatonix CD. Their vocalizations are amazing and most of their achievements hit the mark. There are some that don't on this CD IMHO, but I bought it for them and they seem pleased with it, so....how it rates with the other holiday offerings would be different because the personnel changes. For myself, I love harmony. For me, it was the music of the 50's, then CSNY, Poco, Buffalo Springfield, Christian Bands Petra and Brush Arbor, Glad, country artists like Little Big Town-THEY should come out with a Christmas album! What they can do with their voices is amazing! Sadly, I don't really like country music. OR, maybe Pentatonix could do an acapella Country or Gospel album! Anyway, this is a good CD, but I think they need to start heading into specific directions and quit going with the trends of what we did last year!5My dad makes us all listen to this every Christmas on repeat send helpI personally hate acapella music and am subjected to this CD on repeat the entire month of December. My dad is obsessed with this album. So for people who actually like acapella music, this is a great purchase that you will get use of year... after year.... after year. For people who don't like acapella music, please stay very far away from this album. It is as predictable as you'd imagine. If you're deciding between this and the "That's Christmas to Me" album, they are really similar. The other one has White Winter Hymnal on it which I think is interesting because I don't really consider a Christmas song.3Their best Christmas album yet!I first found out about this because my teenager nearly blew out my eardrums as she ran screaming from her room that Pentatonix was releasing a Christmas album. Once I recovered my hearing, I was able to enjoy their songs, and I'm happy to report this is their best Christmas music yet. I loved how each voice was showcased in Hallelujah. What talent! Up on a Housetop was even better than the Jackson 5 version. What an incredibly gifted group of musicians. This album is definitely going to be our new holiday favorite. It's a good thing, because we wore their other two albums out last year. I own a lot of Christmas music, from Kelly Clarkson to all of the country and classic legends. Pentatonix is the one that gets played the most at our house. Each of the five musicians have gifted voices and talents and are essential to the group's unique style. What I love most about them is that their music is so appealing to all ages, and listening to them has brought my daughter and me closer together. Thanks, Pentatonix!5Not their best work, but still better than most.Definitely not my favorite of their albums, but there are some absolute gems on this one.PROS:- "Hallelujah" is worth the price of the album alone. Breathtaking.- "Coventry Carol" is hauntingly beautiful. As a longtime connoisseur of Christmas music and professional handbell caroler myself, I was delighted to find this virtually unknown English traditional on this album, and they could not have done it more justice.- "White Christmas" feat the Manhattan Transfer?! Are you kidding me?? I get goosebumps at that jazzy ending every time.CONS:- "Up on the Housetop" is a real stretch. The song already had very little substance, and turning it into a hip hop dance party did not help.- "I'll be Home for Christmas" tries a little too hard. I would argue that the musical integrity and emotional attachment many people have with this song cannot really be improved much from the original, and in this case, it almost suffers a bit from the added vocal frills. HOWEVER, it continues to grow on me with each listen.TL;DR-- Whether or not it holds up to their other albums, I would still argue that their weakest Christmas album to date is far and away superior to the majority of mainstream Christmas music. The fact that they recorded this album while touring astounds me.5A variety of fun and beautiful music styles make this a great Christmas albumI love acapella music, and have developed a soft spot for Pentatonix and their funky and clever style. Whether they're covering a popular title or performing an original tune, they bring a sense of fun and originality to a tune -- they don't just stick to a plain cover but try to make it fresh and new. I loved their last Christmas album, "That's Christmas To Me," but when I found songs from a brand-new Christmas album on YouTube I knew I had to own their new album as well. And it does NOT disappoint.Pentatonix has a lovely sound, all the singers harmonizing nicely and not afraid to experiment vocally. They've proven they can cover a number of different styles, from a more pop-sounding style to choral/classical to even an island-sounding beat. And while not every song on this album is strictly a Christmas song (but then, their last album contained songs like "White Winter Hymnal" and "Let It Go," which are winter-themed but not Christmas-themed), they're still a lot of fun.Favorite songs on this album include their calypso-flavored version of "O Come All Ye Faithful," an almost military-sounding "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" which surprisingly works, the playful "Good To Be Bad" (about the pros and cons of being naughty around the holidays), and a melancholy but lovely rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" -- not a Christmas song, but still powerful, and very timely given his recent passing.A fine addition to anyone's Christmas music collection, both this album and their previous Christmas album, "That's Christmas To Me," are well worth the purchase price.5A capella HeavenThis may be my favorite Pentatonix cd of all! The arrangements are so beautiful, and of course you swear you can hear instruments being used, this group is that amazing! I had never heard of some of these songs, and yet love them almost as much as the "classics" that I grew up with. The bass in these songs can bring on the goose bumps and the clear as a bell, absolute perfect blending harmonies are mind blowing. I will be the geek you see in her vehicle singing out loud and moving to this cd (even in July). Pure Bliss!5These are the same songs as last years' albumthese are all the same songs that were on last year's album! shame on me for not checking first, but I am so disappointed. Only one new song that I can see, and that is not even a christmas song. I love Pentatonix, but I feel jipped with this album or remixed, previously released content that I already bought once before.2Vinyl Quality and Vinyl Mastering Very Dissapointing, Misleading Notes on Digital DownloadI returned this because the vinyl was so bad. Not only was the center hole not cut well, but the mastering was very poor, causing so much sibilance in the high frequency ranges that I couldn't listen to it. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard. Also, the liner notes said that you could use the included code to download all Pentatonix prior Christmas albums (plural). However, you could only download this one, which is fine, unless you specifically tell me in the liner notes that I can download them all. I mean, why would you print that?1The best of all PTX albums thus far, Christmas and otherwise, and they are all incredibleI have all of PTX's albums, Christmas and otherwise. I love them all, but this one is absolutely their best. Their rendition of Coventry Carol is incredible. I love their original, "Good to be Bad." It sort of reminds me of a modern spin on the classic "I'm gettin nothin for Christmas." "Coldest Winter" is also awesome.PTX always produces ingenious arrangements, but one of their absolute best on this and all of their albums is "Hallelujah." Personally, I don't think that song belongs on Christmas albums. Biblical imagery combined with the word "hallelujah" does not make a song Christmas song. The biblical imagery is used to tell a story that depending upon interpretation can be described as either forbidden love, or unrequited love, or both--certainly not a Christmas theme. However, ignoring that, PTX's arrangement and strong voices make this the most powerful song on this album, and possibly the most powerful song that they have recorded thus far. Scott and Avi's gradual and controlled build-up during the first few verses bring the song to the point where you don't think it can possibly get any better. But then Kirstin takes over lead, and your brain nearly explodes (in a good way), with Mitch bringing it back down to Earth by the end. I have added this song to my playlists for year round.5
