Christmas Time Is Here AgainCarly Simon's first Christmas album is a solid treat loaded with wide-ranging music. This is certainly not your father's idea of Christmas. Starting with the photographs that decorate the CD's front and back, Carly seems bent on a mission to prove that fifty somethings can be every bit as sexy as eighteen year olds. Actually, she surpasses them. The music itself is a wonderful variety. Eleven tunes brilliantly illustrate exactly what Christmas should be...a time of love, peace, and miracles. The CD's first tune is a melody called "Christmas Is Almost Here". Between the haunting guitar work and Carly's sultry voice, the song twists and winds like a slowly moving river on a lazy winter day. An equally haunting version of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" is given new life as Carly sings a familiar tune to the accompaniment of wonderful dobro and guitar work. The tenor of the CD changes with the Carly Simon penned "The Land of Christmas (Mary)". This funky tune is reminiscent of some of her better tunes from The Bedroom Tapes. A wonderful version of "Silent Night" works well and is an excellent transition to the funky "Twelve Gates to the City". Beatle fans will find the musicians for this tune a delight. Billy Preston and Jim Keltner provide excellent support. Billy Preston's organ work for the Let It Be album and Harrison's Bangla Desh concert was wonderful. Jim Keltner is the legendary studio drummer that worked on solo efforts for John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison."I'll Be Home for Christmas" makes a body want to rush home. Carly's voice is haunting and incredibly sexual. A rather interesting version of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" follows with a slight reggae twist."Heaven" is written by Carly and Lucy Simon. This tune works very well with a bare bones accompaniment of only acoustic guitar, piano, and bass. What follows is a fascinating duet with Willie Nelson as the two give a dynamic interpretation of "Pretty Paper". Although one would scoff at the idea of Willie Nelson's and Carly Simon's voices merging well together, they actually do a breathtakingly excellent job.Carly Simon makes "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" her very own song. With the accompaniment of only a 12-string guitar, anyone who hears this will definitely feel that Christmas time is here again. The CD's concluding song is apt for what currently ails the world. John Lennon's and Yoko Ono's wonderful Christmas tune "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" is delivered with an angst and poignancy that makes one tearfully remember the December 8th, 1980 murder of John Lennon. Shades of Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Palestine, and all the other world's ills are all given an appropriate perspective and one can only hope that the drums of war can ultimately be silenced. All in all, Carly's album has only one flaw. It simply does not last long enough. Otherwise, if one were to own only one Christmas album, this should be the one!5Five Starsawesome5Four StarsCRACKS IN CD Caae, but plays well. It is NOT included on the CD. Totally disappointed.2Hopefully A New Tradition Has Begun!!!A new CD from Carly Simon is always cause for celebration, especially with them coming so few and far between nowadays. That's why I was happy to hear she was putting out a Christmas disc, recorded earlier this year over a couple of days in L.A.! And what a Christmas disc it is! Sure to be a classic, this is a stripped-down, bare bones production that allows the amazing tool that is Carly Simon's voice to shine. The CD opens with the wistful title track. This joyous ballad captures the faith and hope of this most special time of year, and certainly sets the tone/mood for the rest of the album. "O Come, All Ye Faithful" features a nice, almost naked arrangement. Said arrangement allows co-producer Don Was to feature Simon's voice as the primary instrument, a voice that, after almost 35 years in the business, just keeps getting better and better. Beautiful! Next up is "The Land Of Christmas (Mary)", a folk-pop original that could easily fit on one of Simon's pop releases. All strumming guitar and hushed, then soaring, vocals, the song has a gorgeous lullaby feel to it; you can just picture Carly singing it to her kids long ago, or maybe even to grandkids at Christmases yet to come! "Silent Night" is, without a doubt, the centerpiece of CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST HERE. You need a certain gentle beauty in your voice to really do justice to this classic standard, and Simon nails it....in spades! With just acoustic guitar, bass and some harmony vocals, all the love that is Christmas is perfectly embodied is this wonderful track. Things get knocked up a notch on "Twelve Gates To The City." Always a closet rocker, Simon grabs hold of this gospel-drenched tune and makes it her own. You go, girl! "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs, and Simon doesn't disappoint with her rendition. Even with Dean Parks' jazzy acoustic guitar providing the only musical backing, the track has a big band vibe going on (picture a hidden track on TORCH or MY ROMANCE!), and Simon's voice caresses the words like a velvet glove around a fine-boned, translucent hand. I was a little put off at first by Simon's new additional lyrics but, after repeated listens, they totally make sense. Instead of just being a wartime classic about homesickness and wishful thinking, this beauty can now also represent all those families torn apart this time of year by divorce (amoung other things). I was also a little concerned when I read months ago that "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" was going to be given a reggae treatment. Well, I should have trusted Simon and Was and not worried! Make no mistake....that's a reggae groove, but it moves beyond the traditional boundaries and takes on an almost-gospel feel that proves hypnotic (helping out on vocals is Simon's son Ben Taylor, a star just waiting to shine!). "Heaven", co-written with sister Lucy, is a piano-drenched ballad that just soars. It's delivery is made all the more touching by Simon's plaintive, almost angelic, vocal. I'm not a huge Willie Nelson fan, so I probably would have voted for almost anyone else as a duet partner with my favorite singer. However, I have to admit that their duet on Nelson's "Pretty Paper" fits right in here. "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" has an odd vibe going on....it's delivered in a clear, traditional vocal, but Mark Goldenberg's Rickenbacker 12-string guitar work has a spacy, futuristic feel to it. And maybe that's the point.....that these classics will carry on for years more to come, from generation to generation. Amen. CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST HERE closes with "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)." I'm still torn over this track....on the one hand, I would have liked another standard, say "Away In A Manger" or "Silver Bells." On the other hand, it certainly seems timely, and Simon delivers it with gusto. In the liner notes Simon hints that there are a couple of tracks that didn't make the final cut, but may show up on a future volume. Here's hoping Carly Simon and Christmas albums becomes an annual tradition!5Carly at Christmas, a dream come true!I will admit that it took awhile for this album to grow on me, it's not flawless like many of Carly's other releases. Like Carly wrote in the liner notes, it's very much like a live album. Her voice, and the sound of the recording, is very raw and very real here, and it works. Christmas Is Almost Here has become one of my favorite Christmas songs, and Heaven (written and performed with her sister Lucy) is another great original song. Her covers of the classics Silent Night, Oh Come, All Ye Faithful, and God Rest, Ye Merry Gentlemen are beautiful. Like I said, it may take some time for this album to grow on you, but after a Christmas or two with it, it will become a regular staple. Now Carly, how about another Christmas album?!5
