Now That's The Jars of Clay I Fell In Love WithYour wild Christmas party is starting to slow down, everybody's is getting over their party mood, and starting to settle down, maybe they're feeling the Christmas love, maybe they're taking in the festive atmosphere. You just finished your new Relient K Christmas album, so what do you put in for your quieting party? What do you put on to set a mood for love, reflection, peace, and some time with God? Christmas Songs by Jars of Clay.As with any great Christmas album, this is mixed with a few of new tracks, along a few old classic that set your clock back to the day of ole, and there's a quite a few classics that you won't remember, but this album changes that. The first classic is "Wonderful Christmastime" originally done by Sir Paul McCartney. You know you've heard it, it kind of has a electronic flavoring? Well this version differentiates itself by having a more piano flavoring to it. But what really makes it a classic version is Dan Haseltine's amazing, soothing vocals. It also smoothly integrates "We Three Kings" into the song."Love Came Down At Christmas" is a great original tune with it's folk feel, and great instrumental work. "Hibernation Day" is the highlight of the album with it's soft musical style. A sweet snow-day lovesong, this is a great piece of work by Jars of Clay, both vocally, and musically. "Peace Is Here" is another amazing song, with it's epic type buildup, leading up to a magnificent chorus. In fact, the whole song is epic in it's nature, lyrically, vocally, musically. It's from this point on that the album really starts slowing down, especially with tracks like "Evergreen" which are great for sitting in a comfy chair drinking hot chocolate, and enjoying a nice crackling fire.Remember the excellent "Drummer Boy" album that came out about ten years ago by the band? The one that built up the anticipation for this album so much? Well the track are here too, but reinterpreted. "Drummer Boy" now has a constant drum sound throughout the song, giving a whole new feel to the song. With a label change, Jars of Clay enters a whole new era for the band. And what a way to kick it off, the album is simply amazing. A array of emotions fill the album, but as in songs like "In The Bleak Midwinter," the focus is never taken off of God.This album is really about the finer things of the Christmas season, not about presents, and food, but of love, peace, reflection, and God. You could even say this album's theme is the true meaning of Christmas. So when looking on the shelves of the music store, and you're clouded with the fragments materialism, commercialism, party planning, and other things, just look for the album with the shining star in a Rockwellian portrait. The cover says it all.5"Peace Is Here" deserves to be in your yearly rotation of Christmas songs. Gloria!First you should know that there are many songs here that are Jars of Clay originals or little known covers. The better known Christmas fare all has a unique Jars touch and feel added to it.Of the original material the song "Peace Is Here" is a wonderful, Spirit-infused piece of Christ Mass (worship). It's is probably my favorite of the album. Other original songs, some of which aren't celebrating Christmas so much as they are a shivery white winter, fit the project fairly well with the exception (IMO) of "Evergreen" with its downturned, slightly out of tune notes and feel.Of the covers the Clay men do a wonderful and affectionate and bright version of Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime".Of the traditionals several were chosen that were unknown to me like "Gabriel's Message", a big cathedral hymnal type of song. But the known songs, such as "O Little Town of Bethlehem", were given a worshipful but almost electronica treatment where the music has a slight buzzy energy and clear worhsipful vocals and hums. I liked them very much though they aren't necessarily my favorite versions of these well-known and oft repeated Christmas songs. And, perhaps as an "of course", they included their popular fan favorite version of "The Little Drummer Boy". Always enjoyed. So in summary this wintery Christmas inspired CD offers much more than an off-the-rack Christmas CD that you might buy. It will be reflective, celebratory, and worshipful. Thanks to those JoCs who continue to put out one fine release after another. Keep up the inspired work.4Nice mix of original songs and original arrangementsNice Jars of Clay Christmas Album. I give it 5 stars because I can't think of any negatives. Sound nice original songs along with a few standards and instrumentals. I liked the following tracks: 1. The Gift of St. Celila, 2. Wonderful Christmastime, 5. Hibernation Day, 6. Winter Skin, 9. Evergreen, 10. Christmastime Is Here, 11. Drummer Boy, 12. Gabriel's Message, 14. In the Bleak Midwinter, 15. I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. That's 10 out of 15. Not bad.5I enjoy it every Christmas seasonOne of the niocer Christmas albums. I enjoy it every Christmas season.4Christian Rock bands do Christmas Songs better than non-Christian bandsThese are creative and vibrant arrangements of Christmas songs. Some may stun you with their originality. It is like listening to Wilson-Phillips version of "Silent Night" the first time. Christians do things with Christmas music because they LOVE Christmas. It isn't histrionics. It isn't showing off. It is love. I can tell the difference. I bet you can too.5'Love Came Down at Christmas'.We decided to order this cd when we heard the Jars of Clay song 'Love Came Down at Christmas' There are many cd's we have purchased in the past after hearing only one or two songs of the cd and were dissapointed that the rest of the songs were not very good. This is an exceptional cd. Yes, there are some frequently played Christmas songs on this cd but Jars of Clay have unique renditions of all of them. Their harmonies continue to give me goose bumps at times. The electronic accompainments are very pleasing to the ear also.5Great even for those whom are not Christmas Music FansOne thing I dred during the Christmas season is the many repeatitive annoying Christmas songs that play over the intercom system at retail stores across this country. It annoys me so much, if someone were to ask me if I like Christmas music I typically say no. Well in reality I do enjoy Christmas albums that are well thought out and not over the top. Some of the best are ones that the artists treat like it is a regular album. "Christmas Songs" by Jars of Clay is a good example of that. It has the perfect mix of new songs along old classics that are arranged to sound like classic Jars tunes. This year I played it in the background while I was at work and I tended to enjoy this one the most this year. Very relaxing and very festive.Another album I would recommend if you like this one is "My Holiday" by Mindy Smith. Her style is not all that different from Jars of Clay.5great instrumental work behind itChristmas songs with the band's personal twist, great instrumental work behind it! Lil drummer boy is my favorite! It still seems strange to play Christmas music at higher volume levels, but this CD you need to crank up!5Love the CDLovely CD. I am a Jars of Clay fan4Always Pleasantly Surpised, Never DisappointedI must in all honesty echo for the most part the review of Derek M. Foster. Given that I totally agree with the balance it has and even some of the criticisms, I have only a couple thoughts to add for discussion sake and also so that the good reviews are reinforced.Last year my wife and I bought Sarah McLachlan's album "Wintersong", and found it to definitely be our favorite Christmas album; however, our only criticism was that at times it seems to be on the more depressing side of music, where Christmas songs should be joyful! But even in that she seems to capture the meditative importance of Christmas (God will use whom He will). But I echo the sentiments of others that Christmas songs should be joyful in that Christ was born! There are few things to celebrate as much as that (and they all have to do with Him, of course). In the case of this Jars of Clay album, there is a real joy in Christmas music without succumbing to a real, for lack of a better term, cheesiness or fluffiness that accompanies almost every modern day Christmas album. Although it is true that the back half of the album is at times too slow, I never got the sense that the joy was lost, and like all Jars albums, it is always very deep, even when they are having fun.Having said that, I can also understand the desire to have Christmas albums sung with a certain anonymity, and for the most part I too enjoy that aspect of it; but I have come to realize over the years that Jars write with a signature that is fundamental to who they are, and it is difficult to imagine them otherwise. And besides, who doesn't enjoy hearing a classic with a distinguishable voice like Bing Crosby. In the future, we or our children may enjoy the incredible voice of Dan Haseltine and the style of Jars of Clay. But again, I appreciate that review. It was spot on.4
