I appreciate that these 5.0 mm lozenges exist! For those of us doing a pick shootout, these 5.0 mm lozenges put things in perspective. These black fatties are curiously comfortable, but there are too many missed notes when doing fast alternate picking, probably because they lack a hard edge. The Flow shape in Ultex works for me, fast, articulate, accurate, but right around 2.00 mm is where they start to chirp a little too loudly, and it comes through the amp speaker. The 4.20 chirps loudly, but it s comfortable, still has a nice tone, and the dark green, opaque color gives them the extra cool point in my humble opinion. I ll likely never use this for guitar, but they make a great fidget device; simply roll them around between your fingers!5I love these picksI have always made a point of trying all the picks I could find, and although their effect on what the average listener hears is usually minimal, picks can feel and respond vastly different in your hands.I prefer thick picks, which these obviously are. They are contoured enough to glide over the strings a little, so they don't feel cumbersome on faster runs. They have a nice finger grip texture and thumb indentation so they don't move around in your grip.My only (very minor) complaint is that they are hard to find in dim lighting when dropped. I may try putting a light colored stripe on each side for that.5No inherent flaws, just not what I'm looking for. This is a decent pick. It's well made and the material is great. It's comfortable to hold, and it won't slip out of your hand with heavy strumming. The biggest disappointment for me was in the way it interacts with the string. As soon as it comes in contact with the string, even lightly, there is a high pitched click. It's annoying and it can be heard through everything I play. Also, the bevel from the flat of the pick down to the point is very rounded. This made it difficult to get a clear, sharp attack when I pluck the string. I do like to add texture to the front of a note by raking the edge of the pick before I pluck the string, but it's only stylistic and I don't want it all the time. This pick may be perfect for some players, but it's not for me.3Not a fanI got the 5.0mm Large Pointed Tip. The edge profile is really blunt, so while it is indeed very fast you get very little attack, and possibly the sounds of the pick scraping the string or of a string buzz against it as you make contact. You'd think they could have spared an extra picture to show the edge view. FWIW it's a hair thinner than 5mm and with the hollow you end up with closer to 4mm between thumb and finger. Also the surface is smooth and not pitted and rough as the picture makes it look. Prominent mold marks. I'll see if I can file it into a more usable shape.2My new guitar pickI've been playing guitar since 1975 and have been using Dunlop Jazz III's for years. The difference in picks is vast...if you seek a thicker than thick tone, here is your pick. Because of the thickness (I bought the 5mm pointed tip) there is some adjustment period. What I have come to notice is that this pick actually provides many different tonal influences based on your picking hand dynamics. I'm playing a Grote Jazz guitar through a Fender Champ 20 and I roll down tone and volume on the guitar with the amp settings on black face clean with reverb. Crossing over to the old Jazz IIs, the tonal difference is like night and day...the Jazz IIIs sound very bright compared to the Primetone. If you are a player who likes a lot of dynamic control, this is a wonderful pick. Looking forward to many years of playing with these picks!5These are the best picks I've found for jazzThese are the best picks I've found for jazz. I like to file down the tips in a way that makes them very smooth. This allows me a great deal of control over the dynamics of my playing, and the tone is very warm. The pick seems to just glide over the strings. The only drawback, if it is one, is that the thickness of the pick can cause a "chirp" sound when it makes contact with the string.5Good pickThey are something else. After using thin picks all my life. They are interesting and I keep finding myself using them. I don't think it's meant for speed though. More of a strumming pick.4Tiny!I got the 3mm round tip. The picks are friggin' tiny, like smaller than my thumbnail. They are half the size of a normal pick.If they were normal sized I would have given them a 5.3Unique Jazz pick from the masters of jazz picksI am a huge fan of Jim Dunlop Jazz picks. These Primetone picks are unique because they are thicker than ever. The 5mm round tip version has the most dramatic bevel I've played yet. I'm not sure that all the varieties are all this way, but the round tip version is beveled only on one side of each playing edge (left if it's pointed away from you) not beveled on all sides, so only the edge that strikes the string is rounded off.The craftsmanship on the pack I received is great. Playing with a 5mm pick takes some adjusting, but the tone is bombastic and well worth some effort. If you want to try something different, and you enjoy thick picks, these are well worth the money. If you enjoy playing guitar with extra-thin, cellophane guitar picks, you might want to try something more intermediate like a Jazz III first, because the 5mm thickness is pretty extreme.5Very thick but surprisingly easy to useI bought these picks because Django Reinhardt used picks made in a similar fashion, although his weren't made of whatever space age polymer these are made of, as it didn't exist in the 1930's. But since Django seemed to know a little something about playing guitar, I thought I'd try them. WOW! They're absolutely terrific, much easier to use than I ever thought they'd be, and I can play guitar or bass for hours without any fatigue or pain. Now if only they'd turn me into as good a guitarist as Django...LOL!5
