Tone for days! JUST DON'T CUT THEM!!I'm an intermediate, finger/digger style, rock/funk player who loves sinfully low action on my 4 string J bass and the occasional drop D or D standard. I've been using .45 Chomes and Fender flats but missed the zing and growl of rounds. Well, this is the tone and feel I've been looking for. I'll have to update after they've worn in for a few weeks but if even 80% of this tone stays for 4-6 weeks, I'll be thrilled. Now for the cons. I followed the included install instructions figuring there's a reason for them and not wanting to waste $ messing them up; assuming there's something EB knows that I don't about installing their product. Unfortunately, when tuning up that beefy G string, it snapped right at the bend in the tuning machine! I called EB's customer service and they promptly sent a replacement and admitted that the instructions omit the most important part - DON'T CUT EVEN THE SMALLEST BIT OFF THE TIP OF THE STRING LIKE YOU'VE DONE FOR YEARS! Apparently that disrupts the winding enough to compromise the string. And on a .55, the tension is just too high when tuned to pitch.Just update instructions in bright red to warn not to cut and this will be a 5 star set. 5 star service from Ernie Ball too.4Overall good set of stringsOk, if you're looking for a Chris Squire piano string clarity in a flatwound, I doubt you'll get any closer than these. Initial great tone, seems to dull off slowly (I've had these on a fretless Warwick for over a month and they still sound better than any steel or nickel-wound flats brand new-at least to my ear), but there is a "catch"; These strings have an irritating habit of grabbing when sliding the fingers up or down the neck, hence the pesky lack of that fifth star. Personally I can deal with it and have gotten accustomed--You may or may not.I still like 'em, and will purchase again.4Brightest flat wound strings I've ever heardWow. Disclaimer: I'm a guitarist who plays bass for fun, and recently bought a fretless from a friend. There's an age-old assumption that flat wound strings sound dull and thuddy compared to round wounds. But I could tell my friend was wearing ruts into his fretboard with round wound strings, so I wanted to try. I'd tried flatwounds in the past and was not happy, I don't like that dull sound at all, so I looked for a brand that was trying to preserve the brightness. I will say that these aren't exactly as bright as round wound slinkies, but they are darn close, and the feel and lack of fretboard damage is great. Highly recommended, I will definitely be using these from now on.5Just might be the only strings I'll ever use! This is my first set of flatwound strings, but not my first set of Earnie Ball. I have a set of their cobalt strings on an electric guitar, and they're fantastic, so I was confident that I was making a good choice for my bass.I was interested in flatwound in an effort to save my fingertips, but I was concerned about losing the brightness of roundwound. Then I ran across these, which are advertised as being brighter than traditional flatwound -- that, along with Earnie Ball's reputation for quality, were all I needed to make a purchase.I really like these strings -- they feel great, play well, and sound fantastic! These are probably the only strings I'll ever use on my bass.A little advice for the Fender owners: you probably won't want to cut the A string. Since these strings are a lighter gauge, and therefore impose less tension, you might need the extra windings on the post to drive the string to a deeper angle across the nut. Otherwise, open A will buzz like crazy.5Do not sound like "normal" thumpy flatwoundsInstalled on a Fender Am Deluxe Precision. They are quality strings as far as I could tell. nice and smooth with little or no string noise from slides. However they have a very bright zing to them that completely sounds out of place in old school thumpy Jamerson styles. Yes, they can probably be bright enough for slap and pingy styles or with a pick, but these have more high harmonics than the roundwounds they are replacing. Put on the E string and left the others in place and was completely put off by the thin sounding tone compared to the DR roundwounds. May try them on my fretless J or on the P again with a mute, but this is definitely not the sound I expected.4These are flatwounds that sound almost like round woundsThese are flatwounds that sound almost like round wounds. If that is what you are going for, then you will like them. If you wanted a flatwound sound, these are too bright.I cut my strings and had no problem. I bent the ends at right angles before cutting them so they don't unwind. Not sure if that really does anything but they seem to work.Update:I originally purchased these strings in May. I loved the set and honestly, these strings are fun to play with on my American J Bass. But, I decided to try and test out of some other strings to see if still liked these or wanted to return to roundwounds. After trying out the D'Addario halfwounds I noticed that these strings were brighter than the halfwounds and can get thumpy like true flatwounds. These really respond to how you pluck or pick the string. So I decided to buy another set here since the stores near me do not carry them. When my second set of slinky flatwounds arrived, I was incredibly disappointed. The B-String was rusty right out of the package. The only thing keeping the 4-Star rating is how much I enjoyed my first set. I hope I can get my hands on a new set soon but the two Guitar Centers near me do not carry them and as I'm writing this review, it's not available on Prime :(3WOWI've only ever used round wounds before. I play a minimum of thirty minutes per day (generally an hour or more when I can). I change my strings about once every 9 months to a year, as they start to sound dead. This is my fourth set of strings in my entire three year long bass playing expedition. I have arthritis in at least two fretting fingers. Prior to these new strings my arthritis has prevented me from playing for as long as I'd like to some days due to the joint pain when pressing the strings against the frets, and which is especially exacerbated when sliding from one fret position to another along the neck. I haven't had a pain issue in the week or so I've had these new strings. My fingers glide up and down the strings effortlessly now. The sound seems as bright as my typical round wound strings, but they feel so much smoother and just nicer to play. I was expecting a duller sound due to being flat wound but I've been pleasantly surprised. I've gone from playing around a half-hour to an hour per day to now lasting two to three hours when I can squeeze it in. And still no arthritic pain in my fingers! The purple ends of the strings are a nice touch too. It gives the bass a slightly sharper look, imo. I highly recommend these strings and I will definitely be staying with these for the foreseeable future.5A different kind of stringHave sets of these on 2 basses now, they have a super versatile tone. They rock for both fretless and fretted applications. They are made with a different alloy than most strings, so they will sound a bit different right away. I have found they can really take on the personality of flats or rounds, all depending on your playing style/ how you eq it. With minor tweaks they can go from thumpy to aggressive, and the high output of the Cobalt plays well with my fuzz and distortion. They play super smooth and are almost soft to the touch, even the heavier gauges feel quite supple. Have had both sets for over a year now, and I can hardly tell the difference, even on my fretted bass. The only complaint I have is when I bought them they only had "normal" gauge 5s, but the gauges were actually the same as 4 string lights, so I had to swap the high 4 for a set that was .005 bigger. I do rather like the light B though, it's actually one of the best feeling/sounding B strings I've had on this bass.5These are good strings, sorry GREAT STRINGS!!!!Great for super low action and fast playing consistent quality and they dont rip your skin off like other brands only complaint is i cant afford more love ernie ball strings slick and welcoming to your fingers wont blister as easy with these flatwounds opposed to round wounds also note these strings require care when putting on difficult to put into bridge ( hipshot ) but they do go in just difficult DO NOT BEND BRIDGE END OF STRINGS or they will be messed up but in short these are awsome buy them5Sound Great!I had to buy flats because I had just purchased a (cheap) fretless, and I must say I was worried. All I had heard was how flats sounded a whole lot more dead than rounds, but these sound pretty great to me. Not as bright and tinny as rounds, but they've certainly got a unique sound that is just as good. Great strings. If it matters to you, the strings have purple thread around both ends.5
