A lively collection of familiar and unusual traditional songs and dances from the middle ages that celebrate the winter season and its associated festivals and holidays, with a focus on Yule and Christmas. Songs from the British Isles, Ireland, Germany, France, Poland and Sweden blend medieval and renaissance tonalities with a festive folk energy that awakens the spirits of past ages. Beth and Barry's robust voices combine with a wide array of rustic and refined musical instruments reaching back to medieval times.

Customer Reviews

Surprisingly good!I anticipated that this would be a uniquely entertaining ensemble of songs based on the previous reviews for this album (CD). Barry and Beth Hall do not fail from tracks 1 through 20. The two are very gifted musicians and sing wonderfully as solo or duet (and overtracking harmonizations). The instrumental tunes are equally amazing! Their versatility with instruments is awesome! If the compilation is lacking at all it is because they did not include the individual song lyrics, and a history for each track; for me that would have enhanced my enjoyment. And, although it is not quite the Christmas season (10/02/11) I have indeed been enjoying this album for several weeks already. No doubt I will continue to enjoy it through Christmas and beyond. In fact, I expect that I will enjoy it for many years to come. Hopefully, there will be more middle ages music coming from these two. There is no music that I enjoy more than that which can take me to a long ago and all too forgotten time as that of old Europe. Thank you Barry and Beth Hall!4Give this a spinIf you've been listening to other middle age music for a while, when you first play this album you may feel it takes a bit of time to settle into what might otherwise seem something a bit less 'authentic' just based on the sound ambience or clarity of the recording but give it time and this will setlle most enjoyably into your bones for a rather regular Christmas rotation indeed. Most enjoyable!5The Holidays Aren't The Holidays Without This CD!It is amazing how 2 people can manage flawless multi-part harmony to create a CD of holiday music that is intoxicating, enthralling and among the best of the best. The Middle Ages come to life right there in your home and you are ever thankful for this duo for making it happen. In the era of tired commercialism, it is refreshing to hear holiday music that is emotive and stays on point to uplift and inspire the listener. I can't recommend this CD highly enough.5This is just, flat GREAT!!This couple, Barry 'n Beth, are truly outstanding musicians and singers, and their choice of songs is outstanding. This CD has kinda become the "default" music in my pickup. I mostly just leave it plugged-in, playing thru and starting again. Get one for yourself and I'll bet you'll agree.5Great CD of music from the middle agesI love music from the middle ages and this CD is a joy to listen to. The only minor ding I have with this CD is whether including violins and violas violates the historical accuracy of the period music. The middle ages ended around 1300 and the violin was not invented until the Renaissance period, which started around 1300. The violin and viola weren't invented until around the 1530s and these instruments probably didn't become popular until decades after 1530.5Wonderful musicIf you want something to take the place of the dreadful pablum offered on most radio stations at Christmastime, this is the CD for you. Wonderful, sacred, Christmas music.5Surpassingly Beautiful! If "Gaudete" were the only song on this CD, I would have still bought it! The songs are well chosen, representative of the holiday music from the Middle Ages, and beautifully sung! This CD is for you if you are fan of medieval music!5My New Favorite Christmas CDMy husband and I just listened to "A Feast of Songs: Holiday Music from the Middle Ages" 5 times in a row on our 4 hour trip home from our daughter's home on roads clogged with holiday travelers. This music kept me in a GREAT mood. I really do love this CD!I had never heard of Beth and Barry Hall but I am now on a quest to find more of their work. What amazing talent! Numerous old musical instruments are featured. I have always loved the lute and mandolin but I have never heard of a doumbek, tar, bodhr n or tabor. Not sure what they are but the Halls play them very well! When I read the CD insert we couldn't believe it was just the two of them playing and singing. Not everyone can do harmony on multiple tracks and make it sound this good.I was SO tired of the inane Christmas music being played everywhere I went. (If I hear "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" again I may be sick!) I love our CD of "A Renaissance Christmas Celebration with the Waverly Consort" and I decided to jump on Amazon.com and see if I could find something similar for our Christmas "Road Trip". I have several CDs of Renaissance Christmas music and I can be pretty picky. I don't like every piece to sound the same. Variety (in voice, style and instrumentation) is essential. As I listened to the short clip of each song on this CD I got more and more excited! I was only half way through the clips when I added this CD to my cart.Initially my favorites were 1. Gaudete, 2. Patapan, and 14. Personent Hodie. (My husband especially likes this rendition of 20. Masters in this Hall.) Now I have a hard time determining a favorite. There are some songs I had never heard before: 4. Christmas Eve and 7. Quem Pastores, and 8. The Truth from Above. They are all delightful. They are ALL favorites!NOW I am TRULY "having a wonderful Christmas time!"5Even the four-leggeds like it!Lovely, rich listening experience. One of the best medieval-based CD's I've ever heard. I purchased it because of its good reviews, and I was not disappointed. It set such a soothing yet festive tone as I wrapped gifts and decorated the house. One last thing, a little strange to be writing in a review- my cat likes this music! I notice every time I play it on my computer, I find her practically pressed up against the laptop screen. She never does this any other time. So even the four-leggeds approve!5Absolutely, Positively THE Best Medieval Holiday Music CD!I'm going to tell you the truth. The only thing "wrong" with this CD is that there is not yet a sequel or a volume two. lol It's an absolutely fantastic CD featuring the very best selection of holiday music from the Middle Ages. My wife and I had never even heard of Barry and Beth Hall prior to this purchase. We were searching for a Medieval Christmas CD on Amazon and stumbled upon 'A Feast of Songs,' and were very glad we did. This CD is perfect for playing in the car while Christmas shopping or at home while trimming the tree or just playing softly in the background while baking holiday cookies with family and friends. It's so wonderfully festive with the perfect blend of both lively and gentle Christmas harmonies. If you're looking for a Medieval Christmas CD which is rich and overflowing with exquisite harmonic beauty and passion--this is it. I concur with the other Amazon reviews, it's a definite 'must-have' for any holiday CD collection!'A Feast of Songs: Holiday Music from the Middle Ages' includes:1. Gaudete2. Patapan3.
