We loved Wheat Belly. We also have Grain Brain.These two books have changed our lives. We read Grain Brain first, then bought Wheat Belly. We are now eating a wheat free diet, and we bought the Wheat Belly cookbook. It's helping us adjust to our new way of eating. I've lost 14 pounds in 6 weeks, and my husband lost 8 #'s. At first we went slow, but we wish we jumped in "whole hog" because he is feeling 100% better. He is an Adult 2 diabetic, has high blood pressure, and had irregular heart beat for awhile, was on two heart pills. He also has RA. Now, he feels so good, he's drop one of the diabetic pills, and one of the heart pills, and is doing great. We don't miss wheat products at all. Now am eating all sorts of veggie casseroles , trying new vegetables, and eating low carb fruit like berries, apples, and melons. We love eating the good fats; butter, avocados, coconut oil in my tea, yes my tea! Olive oil and vinegar on green salads, lots of eggs, like every other day an omelet, or eggs and ham. Eggs in our salad, and boiled eggs for snacks, so satisfying. I can't tell you how happy we are to feel good and lose weight at ages 68 and 71. Amen, what more could I say. Two happy wheat free people in Anna, TX. Thankyou, Doctors Davis and Perlmutter!!!5Amazing book!I got this book used and it looked BRAND NEW! This way of eating has been a blessing for me. I have eaten this way for a long time but wanted more detail and this book was perfect. When I give in and eat grains I immediately gain weight, my joints hurt, I feel foggy headed, I get very moody with up and down moods, I get a bloated belly, I feel just plain lousy. As soon as I stop grains and all dairy as well, my health gets a boost like you wouldn't believe. Just the other day I gave in and had a sandwich and other grains for the day, I woke up looking like I was 3 months pregnant. I stopped the grains and lost body water immediately and the bloated belly was gone.5Incomplete ... but on track ...It's true that grain is an issue. But it is "unprotected" grain that is the problem. Grain should always be protected with fat (dairy, olive oil or meat). That explains why wheat has worked in the past and why it sometimes works now. And how it works in other cultures ... pepperoni pizza has all three types of fat. But when the sugar lobby uses majority vote to decide fat and salt are bad (in order to increase sales), you get unprotected wheat without anything to kill fungus in the gut. ( Shouldn't decide fact things by majority vote.) And also today's disease profile. "Gluten intolerance" is a symptom, as is "leaky gut". Both are caused by fungal growth in the gut ... the third disease type.. Shouldn't decide fact things by majority vote. Oh, (natural) salt is good too (it's the trace gold, silver and copper that matter) ... it kills fungal growth in the gut. Pepper scrapes the shell of fungus in the gut. Book is good ... but seems incomplete ... to me. There seem to be five natural antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal approaches. Best I can tell, most churches have all five and Amazon has four of five. Big pharma has regulatory capture and doctors. Got Health? I'm getting it.1Gluten = Seizures in my childMy son started having myoclonus, then he started with Absence seizures....I researched as much ass I could. Put him on a gluten free diet instead of giving the meds from our Neuro...all disappeared! Them one day we cheated and had a donut....BAM! He had his first grand mal within 3 minutes of eating the donut. Back on gluten free diet and has been seizure free for 4 months.I continue to read up on this info and came across this book. Its a good read.5Fibromyalgia, Chronic pain, Diabetes. You MUST READ THIS BOOK.THIS BOOK Absolutely transformed my life in days. Listen after 8 years of trying everything & I mean everything this information radically transformed my life. Fibromyalgia , chronic fatigue, chronic pain , depression , literally all gone in days . If I haven't experienced this transformation for myself I'd be skeptical of this post.. ... 8 years thousands of dollars, pain beyond describing, vanished !!! & it was so simple. 2nd what's happening to our brains due to sugar, carbs, food industry will stun you. The brain is Key along with all the nutrients suggested. This book is A MUST READ. O could go on & on & on. Simple... You want to feel better physically, Mentally, wake up everyday before the alarm well rested on less sleep then usual. Never felt this good Ever..5The stories/patients and the science mean more to me than the hairsplitting in studies...I listened to this book in it s entirety recently. All I can say is: Life Changing!!!Now I DID read the 1 star reviews. This is my take. Physicians that take the time to do bad reviews on Amazon? Ok. But really, there are studies to support about any angle. Truly. But what grasped me were the authors patients with life altering issues, having such incredible improvement or loss of symptoms... not to mention it is just good science. Sure there might be ways to question some of the studies. But the ones that mattered most were the ones not opposed by the nay-sayers 1 star reviewers. Like how they have long since admitted low fat high carb is not (heart) healthy (etc). Duh.If you truly believe that high carbs/sugar diets are not an issue in the American diet, then you aren t looking around. None of the negative reviews that want to poo poo the idea we don t need so many carbs (grains), fail to understand, it seems, that he has plenty of naturally occurring non-grain carbs in this diet. Enough to do what is needed in regards to carbs in our body!Society s whose longevity is related to a plant based diet are typically those very active regardless of age and as was mentioned, a healthy community... that is great for them. Their diets, LIKE HIS, are NATURAL carbs and none processed. In the day of virtual community and low activity, a high carb/low fat diet, well, there is plenty of proof it is not working for us!!There is also plenty of proof of our deficiency of omega 3 s, Vitamin D, and so forth.Go ahead and defend your carbs. I think I will go with the basic statistic that diabetics are twice as likely to develope Alzheimer s and dynentia and take a different path towards wellness... Cuz the road I was on with the SAD (standard American diet) gave me cancer, and put my overall health at huge risk. With low carb I lost a TON of weight, improved my cholesterol ratios and reversed my pre-diabetic state... aye I need grains. Or not!Again-I highly recommend this book! I am alwo seeing changes in my children as we switch our dietary priorities!5How Can I Give Zero Stars?I have rarely read a book that made me so angry.It's probably good to say who I am: a retired physician (diagnostic radiologist) whose retirement project has been studying nutrition and its effect on health for the past 15+ years.The message of this book is that a low carbohydrate, high fat diet promotes brain and overall health primarily by keeping blood sugar and insulin low and controlling systemic inflammation. The diet advocated will help most people manage blood sugar and decrease inflammation for most who are eating a standard American diet (SAD).Sugar and processed carbs are vilified; no argument since they are not healthy. But unrefined grains and whole plant food starches are given the same label. Interesting, since epidemiological studies uniformly find that large groups of people whose major calorie source is these foods live the longest and have the least chronic disease. The absolutely proven healthy diet is one that is exclusively or mainly whole plant foods including whole grains.Since this diet avoids processed carbs and starches it will be calorie restricted for most people who will lose weight and have less inflammation. Perlmutter tells his readers that they can usually get their CRP (a commonly used lab test measuring inflammation) to less than 3 after a month or so. On a whole food plant based diet (WFPB) mine is 0.4 which is about par for people eating this way.Many eating the Grain Brain diet will end up with high serum cholesterol but the author tells us that this is not only OK but good, citing some irrelevant references (too detailed a topic to cover in a review.)Atherosclerosis, which causes most heart attacks and strokes, is barely covered, on one page mentioned as something everyone gets no matter what the diet. This is absurd which I'm sure the author must know. Many people do not get atherosclerosis- those who have eaten a WFPB diet their whole lives. Those who change to this diet reverse atherosclerosis. A WFPB is the only well-proven way to treat atherosclerosis, still the number one killer of Americans.Cancer gets a few passing references. Since overweight people get more cancer the author assumes they will get less cancer in spite of many studies associating animal protein consumption, a mainstay of a Grain Brain diet, with more cancer.The book does advocate eating non-starchy vegetables which is undoubtably a good idea but is unlikely to make up for the other bad advice.It's frightening to contemplate the number of people whose health has been damaged by this best selling book. I do understand that the author has made a lot of money from the book and other related projects: the American dream (nightmare) to create a very profitable business no matter the effect on health or societal welfare.1I'm all in!I'm sold on the author's authority and argument. I'm all in--started following his advice and feel so much better. Down two pant sizes, brain fog is gone, and haven't gotten any of the colds/bugs that the rest of my family has picked up this season. I'm looking at my food choices in a different light, and best of all, my internal medicine physician is on board with the program.5A Life ChangerThis book is a life changer. I have made changes in my diet (about a month now) since reading this book and I already see significant changes in how I feel. I am a care-giver for my wife and I was continually waking up in the early hours before 6 am with anxiety attacks. These have now gone away completely and I sleep throughout the night. It's all about my getting rid of foods with gluten, lowering my carbohydrates to zero, and doing my best to exercising daily. My mind is now clear every morning, I feel great with a positive attitude, and I can handle my care-giving duties easier. And I've lost 10 pounds in that month period. This book has defunct many ideas I thought were true. I couldn't recommended a more important book that you should read. As a reference point, I'm 68. My actions of following the recommendations of this book has been my proof. It is for real!5My Grain Brain and how my health has come back to me.What Grain Brain Did for MeI read the book, Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, MD right before Christmas of 2013. It changed everything I thought I knew about food and its relationship to health. You really should read it. I don t think we can change how we eat without changing how we feel about food. This book did that for me. I ve lost (at last check) 18.2 lbs (April 26, 2014), and that s without exercise, which I ve never been able to do. It s also without going around hungry, which all other diets have made me do. You do not count calories or carbs, or fats, or anything. You just eat what s good for you: Fat - lots of it, meats, vegetables, eggs, cheese, salads, nuts, seeds (my new favorite snack is Pepitas, which they have at Publix). I eat all I want, and when I ve had enough, that s it. I eat a lot less than I used to because I m getting enough fat in my diet, and not stuffing myself with useless breads, crackers, chips, and pasta which just make me hungrier and hungrier. Of course, you know me those were my favorites. You could not pay me now to eat that stuff.Read the book, please! It will change your health, not just the scale. What I ve gained are increased energy, lots less brain fog, joints moving better (do not hurt all the time), less headaches a LOT less, tummy troubles are now non-existent, and before, I was always gaseous or had diarrhea, or just was hurting in general. Those are completely gone. Can you imagine not feeling sick at your stomach? I couldn t either. It was a constant for me, in some form or fashion, ALL THE TIME.My labs were checked in February, after just two months, and my doc was blown away. I was no longer in the diabetic range and my liver functions had normalized. She couldn t believe how much better I said I felt. My depression has lifted immensely. I could go on all day about how much better I feel, but I want YOU to feel better too. I m not asking you to change anything. I m just asking you to read this book. You make up your mind. You decide what s best for you. I do not do everything exactly like the book says. I have picked and chosen what I think is best for me. The best thing about this, the author is not just one man with a theory. He backs up everything he says with research from around the globe. He really knows his stuff.
