A musical iconI remember playing the original vinyl over and over in 1972. The war was over and still the album was considered very daring, controversial and even contraband in some military circles. In 1968 it was THE seminal work of art that reflected a major turning point for the United States in beliefs and activism. Each song rips at the social fabric of a young country learning that every cloud doesn't have a silver lining. People wanted to believe it was the age of Aquarius but were constantly wrenched by sex, drugs, rock 'n roll, total loss of respect for authority and general despair. I think Hair captured all of this. It still stands on its own as a very entertaining, if somewhat dated, collection of toe-tapping tunes. My vinyl version finally wore out so I had to buy this digital remaster to complete my library. It ranks up there with The Beatles Box Set, Rolling Stones 40 Licks, Elv1s 30, Beach Boys Sounds of Summer, Simon & Garfunkel... well, you know the usual suspects.By the way, I was fortunate enough to actually attend both the Broadway and London productions. I preferred the Broadway version. That may just be a matter of taste and the fact I was familiar with the Broadway libretto. They each had their good points.5Essential MusicalHair represented a clear break from older musicals - as good as they were. The sheer number of songs in Hair outstrips other musicals. Moreover, quantity did not come by sacrificing quality: the consistent high level of quality achieved by the composers over so many memorable songs is amazing. Hair is driven by melody, and is catholic/eclectic in reflecting different styles of music. One needs to remember that several artists covered songs from Hair and turned them into hits: 5th Dimension, 3 Dog Night, Oliver. Finally, the sound and lyrics reflect the times and the ferment of the 60's "counterculture" - or at least the perceptions of people who were NOT living the counterculture and trying to make sense of it.The sound of the CD for the original Off-Broadway Cast album as compared to the vinyl (purchased in a 1974 pressing) has been improved by an order of magnitude. The sound of the Broadway Cast CD is also improved significantly over the original CD (which I purchased many years ago, but I cannot remember when). In general, a level of harshness has been removed. However, the mastering engineer appears to have decided to achieve the same overall sonic presentation for both recordings (e.g., overall frequency balance, reverberation, and compression. It is done very, very well to be sure, but it in some sense alters the historical character of the recordings as two separate events, recorded using different engineers and with different production values.5One of the best musicals of the last fifty yearsWhile the basic premise of the show is pretty outdated, these songs remain as vibrant & memorable fifty years later. Had the pleasure of seeing the broadway cast show in 1969 & truly an unforgettable experience.5Five StarsOne of my favorite musical. The music is great5a great musicalI love this musical. when I saw it in Chicago years ago, I went up on stage at the end with lots of others and danced, mainly to say I was once on the stage of the Schubert theater in Chicago.5Best Music Ever! Catchy, Edgy, Definitely SIXTIES!!We ve loved this album/CD since seeing the original play OFF-Broadway in the 60s! The songs are educational, brazen, and memorable! The backdrop is a young man not wanting to be drafted during the Vietnam war and touches onthe adolescent and racism issues of the day.5An Iconic experience. aka uber nostalgicThis album contains the forceful expression of so many feelings of the tumultous decade that turned our country on it's head. Songs like "Aquarius" to call to the hope from the near future, "3-5-0-0" to express the horror of the Viet Nam war, "I'm Black" to document the erosion of discrimination. If you lived it, you know it and love it. If you missed it, it should be required curricula of History and Civics classes, to bring the subject alive. The pre-original off-Broadway cast recording contains many songs that weren't in the final version. And it's crystal clear. Better than the old vinyl records.5"The rest is silence."I was ripe for this album in 1968. A freshman at college, I lapped up these songs about political, cultural and social change - the counterculture. It is no exaggeration to say that it was one of the big influences that helped shape who I am today. And it didn't hurt that the songs were sung by very talented people. My picks as favorites would be "Aquarius" by Ronnie Dyson, "Frank Mills" by Shelley Plimpton, James Rado's "Where Do I Go", Lynn Kellogg's "Easy To Be Hard", and the finale, "The Flesh Failures (Let The Sunshine In)", with Rado, Kellogg and Melba Moore handling the lead vocals. The verse where Kellogg and Moore sing together is just...words fail me. What power! And talk about class! That song contains quotes from Shakespeare's plays "Romeo And Juliet" and "Hamlet", and the entire "What A Piece Of Work Is Man" is a speech from "Hamlet". And if that's not enough, you can even hear Diane Keaton, yes, THE Diane Keaton, singing "Black Boys". These songs were composed with a perfect balance of sharp insight and humor. My 1968 LP was worn out long ago, and I don't even own a turntable anymore. So, hearing this CD, with much better sound than the LP, is phenomenal. It takes me back. The basic ideas in these songs still resonate with me. I never really shed the idealism of the 60's. Call me crazy, but I still think we could change the world and make it better. For everyone, not just the fortunate ones. As they sang in "Aquarius", I am still waiting for the time of "Harmony and understanding/Sympathy and trust abounding".5Good Morning Starshine!I have listened to this version of Hair since I was a little kid on an LP record. I remember I got in trouble for singing some of these songs on the playground. It is my favorite record of all time.If you enjoy musicals, please give this a shot.5HairAttended "HAIR" decades go. Whilst not subscribing to the desired political aims laid out I enjoyed the music greatly. A few years ago my wife and I attended a re-production of the original stage play. The audience consisted of persons mostly our age. As the play progressed the cast frequently stepped to the front of the stage rather than "acting" and sang along with the audience who ALL knew the lyrics and melodies. The production was a grand success, the cast applauding the audience, and on leaving we all seemed to feel younger. This recording helped relived those bygone days as well as the stage play decades later.5
