Pros The yarn winder is great for smaller amounts of yarn ProsThe yarn winder is great for smaller amounts of yarn. (4 oz. or less, in my opinion)It is super fast and easy to use.It makes perfectly stackable center pull balls of yarn for my remnants of yarn left over from previous projects. It is addicting to use. :)The value is hard to beat.NeutralThe product did not come with any instructions at all, but with a little help online I was able to find videos on how to use it.ConsThe yarn sometimes slips around the ball and goes under the ball of yarn into the winding gear and gets stuck making it difficult to untangleThe yarn is NOT meant to be used with more than 4 oz of yarn (in my experience) as it causes more slipping of the yarn and more tanglesThe extended wire/metal arm that the yarn goes through to help wind it constantly falls down making for more knots under the winder. (As long as you constantly make sure it is upright it is ok, but annoying)Summary, it is a great first/beginner yarn winder to own for the beginner/novice crafter; but not for the advanced crocheter/knitter that will need to use it all the time and with copious amount of yarn. 3Great little gadget This is a lovely little tool to have. For the price point, it is the quality I expected. So far I have wound over 15 balls of yarn and it's still going strong!I believe this is the same one being offered by Lacis, and am unsure of why the reviews for this one don't meet the same stars. For what it's worth, the package, when it arrived, appears the same as shown in the other listing, but this one was less expensive. 5I spent so much money because of this thing! Because of this little device I spent an embarrassing amount of money on yarn. I am ashamed of how much yarn I bought just so I can wind it up into smaller skeins with full intentions of plopping one of them in my bag to knit & crochet on-the-go. I even purchased a HOUSWEETY Mixed Aluminum Handle Crochet Hook Knitting Knit Needle Weave Yarn Set so I can learn how to crochet... Oh, did I forget to mention I don't know how to crochet? Well, I don't. But I can knit! And now my yarn looks pretty sitting in stacks on the wall, where it can remind me to use it, instead of stuffed in boxes out of sight and forgotten. 5PERFECT! Not sure what other issues folks have had, but it works just great for me. My BF and I built some yarn swifts, and I ordered this ball winder to use with them. The only problem I have with it is that my kitchen table edge is beveled a little bit, so it doesn't grip too well, but that issue is with the table, not the clamp. Some suggestions: gently but firmly pull the guide all the way out until it stays in place, about 1/2 inch further than it feels like it should. Then it will stay up. Also, wind gently, and watch to make sure your yarn doesn't slip. You can tell when the winder is getting too full as the yarn starts to slip. I'm balling up hand spun, and each skein is about 80 yards, and they come out beautifully. We wound about 7 balls the first day - different weights and types of yarn, and everything worked fine. I've also wound up some store-bought cotton yarn. I think if you're wanting to ball up something bigger than a 4 oz. skein, you should get a bigger winder. Hope this helps! 5Almost perfect Works great very simple to use. Much fast that rolling by hand. Securesto the table nicely doesn't move around. I only gave it four stars because I had two issues. First the little metal arm does not lock in place it moves around allot. If it moves it messes up the whole cake you just rolled. Second it doesn't hold much yarn. It will hold a journal size skein but I have to split some of my larger skeins into two cakes. Fix the little arm and I'll give it 5 stars! 4Enables my yarn addiction :) I'm a beginner so I can't vouch for more complex projects but I love this item. I didn't have any problems with this. The only thing is that if I go a little crazy and crank it super fast, sometimes the spool flies off but otherwise no problems. I don't use the super expensive or fancy yarns so I don't know if it would be different. I have used dk to super bulky yarn sizes and all worked great. I didn't have to split skeins; I managed to make super giant cakes. I didn't modify it by putting a cover to make a bigger cake but I can see how it might be helpful. I was super psyched when, finally, a yarn tool worked properly for me. I went nuts and did all my skeins. The only tip I'd give is that I hang mine off the size of the table. My table was too fat for the clamp to sit upright but this works better. Gravity keeps the arm pulled out and and keeps an even tension. This seems like it would solve people's issues with the arm not staying up.Unfortunately this product is helping enable my yarn addiction :) 5Don't waste your money I wound two balls of yarn before tossing this hunk of junk in the trash. The first (252 yards) would not fit on the spindle. I ended up winding about a quarter of it by hand. The second, 250 yards of DK, wrapped itself around the gearing mechanism and that part of it could not be salvaged. Anybody who actually wants to buy a decent winder, try Knit Picks. 1Great Product! I'm loving my wool winder! I put off ordering one for a long time, but glad I finally got one. It is a joy to manage partial skeins and left-over bits. Wish I had gotten the full-skein sized one, but wasn't ready to pay the higher cost, since I wasn't sure if I'd even like or use a winder if I had one. For stitchers who use mostly basic skeins, (Red Heart, etc), a smaller wool winder, like this, is great. I have started buying the artisan skeins and would prefer to make them center pull (easier to manage balls), but those won't fit on this smaller winder. Depending on your yarn use, get the biggest size you can. Also, if you prefer a center core inside your skein, empty toilet paper tubes fit on this nicely (paper towel tubes are too big around). I have read yarn can get under the spindle and get caught in the metal gears. If you cut a hole in a cool-whip container lid, and fit that under the spindle part, yarn can't get under. Easy fix that will make your yarn winding a breeze! 5Doesn't make me happy. I thought this winder would be a good one. Unfortunately it isn't. The spool which the yarn winds onto doesn't stay in place. There is no locking position. It flies off the base with no warning and you have to unwind what yarn is on it and start again (it doesn't do this every time but about 50% of the time). I do not wind fast, I wind in a moderately slow pace (due to arthritis in my shoulder). Also, the yarn guide does not stay in place. I need to use a clothespin positioned on the base of the post to hold it steady. It has probably been too long for me to return this. If I had used it more often when I first received it I would have returned it. I would not recommend this. 2... was a bit hesitant to order after reading some poor reviews but took the plunge because of the reasonable ... I was a bit hesitant to order after reading some poor reviews but took the plunge because of the reasonable price. My hesitation was unfounded. This is a great little winder. A few things for you to note (these hints were given in other reviews - that is where I found them) - you MUST pull the wire guide out completely or it will not stay in place. It pulls hard so my suggestion is to pull it out - wrap a few turns - if it is loose - pull a little harder. Keep this up untill it stays put. I found the winding base to be a bit to small for larger skeins so I added a "plate" cut from cool whip lid - played with the size till I had it wide enough but not so wide it touched the yard being wound or the guide - then went to a plate from a sheet of template plastic to get a smoother edge. The height of center tube is a bit short for larger skeins so again after reading the reviews I added a toilet paper cardboard tube. All issues were solved and the winder works wonderfully. I cleaned up my yarn stash and wound almost 30 "cakes" in a few hours one afternoon. I love this little machine. 5
