Customer Reviews

Max Payne is a first-person shooter classic...If you've never played Max Payne before and you love first-person shooters then you owe it to yourself to buy this game. It's cheap now, so there's no reason not to own it before it's out of print.Max Payne is a gritty story about a cop just doing his job. His wife an baby are murdered and it throws his world into turmil. As you can imagine, he wants revenge and he gets revenge many times over. What makes Max Payne unique is that it uses John Woo style moves and action. This was the first game to feature "bullet time", which allows the player to slow down the action and perform fancy dive and jump moves while blasting their weapon at a target in slo-mo. Couple this with a good story and vengeance and you have a winning game. You get sucked into the world of Max Payne and you can't help but love it.Max Payne is a huge game. By the end you'll have killed hundreds of people in your quest for the truth. It's plenty of action. Even though by today's standards the graphics look a little dated, it was top of the line for its time, with reflective floor surfaces and flying wall debris.Another cool thing about this game is you can use cheat codes and slow the action down to a stop, then move it forward one frame at a time. You see, with Max Payne the bullets are actually flying out of the gun at the target, so when you do super slow-mo you get to see the bullets in mid-air heading for their target. Using the time cheat you can watch bullets hit targets and debris flying all over the place in realistic fashion.Long story short, it's a must-own game for FPS fans. There's no multi-player, but who needs it when you have all the action you could want. Also check out Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. It continues the story, has updated graphics and the characters' mouths move when they talk. It takes Max Payne up another level. However, the game is somewhat shorter than the first installment. Get both of them today!5WowGraphics were the selling point on this game, beats the graphics in Nocturne, hands down. But the game is much more then a piece of candy. The game pulls you into the character and before you know it you're avenging your wife and child. The violence isn't really graphic but the game is still very adult themed. Just thought I'd point that out before I went in any further. The game itself is just a treat, the music, the action, the graphics, the sounds, the weapons the story, oh yes, the story is wonderful. It's nothing original, it's the man who had his wife and child kill and hunts down the sleaze who did it and finds out why. People who liked the Punisher comics will love this game because it has a similar vibe to it. Except Max is an undercover cop... oh and the cop thing is used. The corruption of his partners will make you wonder about those cops at the donut shop the next time you pull in ;). Splendid game, I give it thumbs up... One thing, last I checked there was no patch for gamepad support. I usually insist on gamepads but the aiming and moving really requires the keyboard and it drags you in further.5THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYEDThis is BY FAR, the best game I have ever played. I love action games, I usually play games like Unreal Tournament or McGee's Alice or Sacrifice, but I tried out this game - IT BLEW ME AWAY. The graphics are divine. The story is very gripping and keeps you playing right along hour after hour. The slow motion bullets are AWESOME. This game makes you remember when you wished video games were cooler and more like real life. THIS one, is as close as you can get - for year 2001, that is. It is simply amazing and very very fun to play. You are just doing tons of things - there is never a time to be bored in this game. You open doors/drawers/cabinets/ even drive things!!!WELL worth the money and time to play. You will love it.5Five StarsLove this game, but FYI you'll need Windows 2000 or older to run.5Retrograde Game I Missed, Never Too Late to PlayOk, I have built a Windows 98SE PC? Why? Because I parts left over from building a Win 95 PC to run Mech Warrior 2. So, I bought this game installed it on my Win 98 PC. Next, I installed the 1.05 version patch. WOW! Now I can play on HD graphics setting. Good thing about building a WIN98 PC 20 yrs after the OS was released is that NOW I have SUPER DUPER CPU and graphics card that was not available at the time. I installed the latest video card that work for Win98 drivers, the Nvidia GeForce FX5500. This game looks beautiful and plays amazingly fast. Sound is great, too! The story helps make this game great! The slow motion bullet ability is really mandatory if you want to stay alive. The pain pills healing ability are scarce, omg.So, this game is the first new game I've played on my new retrograde WIN 98 SE Gaming PC. And, I'm loving it. Plays so much better than on the consoles, and graphics are better too.Max Payne 2 i shall play on my Win XP PC. Max Payne 3 can be played on Windows 10.If it ain't Max Payne, there's no gain. LMAO5Max Payne- Biggest B.A. in video gamesDISCLAIMER- If you saw the movie and you haven't played the game, you have been wrongfully informed of the Max Payne world! The movie was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE, and did not do the game ONE BIT OF JUSTICE. Yeah, there was slow motion, drugs, shotguns and guys in SWAT gear, but that's pretty much it... And as much as I love Mila Kunis, she and the rest of the cast (Sorry MarkyMark) were terrible representations of what is Max's world. The game series (ESPECIALLY #2) is one of the greatest I have ever played, filled with extremely dark comedy that make you laugh out loud, amazing action, suspenseful storylines, and all out Badassery.I bought this game because the second installment of the series is and will always be my favorite video game of all time. I wanted to take a look at the game's roots and see how the previous one matched up. The biggest changes between the two are an improved script/darker and more comedic storyline in #2, and some better voice acting. Other than that, the gameplay is the same, most of the same weapons are used, and the same AMAZING styles of combat are used. Seriously, the Max Payne Bullet Time feature is one of the coolest features I have had the pleasure of using in video games. There is nothing like the rush of the perfectly executed, awesome movie-like shoot-while-diving type encounter, and Max Payne has the patent on it.I would definitely recommend this game to people who enjoy the "Noire" genre and an action game with a good storyline. I would, however, recommend the sequel more highly, just because it is one of the greatest things to ever be created by a video game company. The Max Payne series is amazing, you should definitely give it a try!4DisappointedProbably should have known better. This is a great 3rd person shooter but it is not compatible with any of the current PC operating systems.1Payne to the Max!Two words that simply make this game worth playing: Bullet-time!I really enjoyed Max Payne. I like games where I have to think by preference, but this was just too much fun even though the body-count ends up like something from a Terminator movie. Basically, you're just waltzing in, "Playing it Bogart" and pumping the baddies full of bullets, some of which are Full Metal Jacketed. It's nice that they took such things into account and the effects of your gun-blazing are seen with more detail to your environment than the baddies. The developers were extremely detailed with environment in this beautiful game. It's really eye-candy and I honestly enjoyed the script: it's funny in parts and wonderfully descriptive in its brevity. The writers did a great job setting the mood. Comic and noir lovers will be especially pleased as it is above all artful. Also, knowing a thing or two about guns and ammo, this game does a fair job keeping with the traits of the various weapons that you'll use in regards to rate of fire, kick and penetration. Stopping power is sometimes a foriegn concept, though because as the game progresses some of the baddies you'll face are just inhumanely robust. That was mildly annoying, but keeps it challenging when Max can use Bullet-time to knock them off with ease. The odds at some points are so incredibly against Max that when you do manage to kill all the baddies in a room, the cinematic effect of watching the bad-guy fall is a nice bonus. It's a tough game in some parts. It is a little on the short side, but I was ready for the end when I got to it because it's mostly mindless gun-fighting in close quarters. Still, it's fun and there are 4 different skill levels to play, so it does have replayability. There is a big difference in difficulty from the Fugative level to the Hard Boiled. I haven't played Dead on Arrival yet or the New York Minute, but I plan to when I just want to have some fun and get freaky with the shot-dodging.Highly recommended. The first thing I said, out loud, when I played this and flew through the air in slow mo was, "Ohmygod, this is so wicked cool!" 'Nuff said.5Brought me back a few years...Great gameplay, the first game to incorporate "bullet time", very good storyline, incredibly compelling. The story and gameplay will keep you coming back for more. I had this game when I was younger, and played through it, but misplaced my copy, so I bought another one on a whim, and I'm glad I did. Great game. Not the newest, or the best graphics, but that shouldn't matter if the gameplay is truly enjoyable, which this game has in spades.5A classic.Have you ever had an urge to watch a really great movie again? Or maybe to read that novel that kept you up all night long and see if it really is as good as you remember. Well, that happened to me with a video game: Max Payne. When it first came out, the game was amazing. Of course, back then I was easily impressed and what did it for me were the graphics. This thing looked great! The story and gameplay were solid, polished and fun, but nothing compared to the graphics. After 9 years the graphics cease to impress, yet the gameplay and storytelling are as engaging as before, or even more! You really get a kick out of every comic-style cut-scene and the film noir atmosphere.Highly recommended and guaranteed to keep you hooked from start to end.5
