Terrific collectionMetal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty"Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty" didn't quite end up as people expected. The opening section takes place on a Tanker being infiltrated by Solid Snake, who's on a mission to get evidence of a new Metal Gear. This acts as a 1-2 hour prologue to the main part of the game, which takes place on the "Big Shell," a huge oil rig-looking structure with multiple connecting platforms and pathways. Despite the cover promptly displaying Snake's mug, what players got instead during this section was Raiden, a less gruff, less battle-weary, very "green" rookie soldier with distinct long white hair. I dug him. One of the things I like about Raiden is how he's introduced. At the beginning of the "Big Shell" mission you aren't sure who he is. Is he a clone of the Big Boss? Is he a re-imagining of Solid Snake? In proper "MGS" fashion, the answers only slowly reveal themselves all the way up until the closing credits. The big upgrades to gameplay over the previous game include a first-person perspective for aiming, along with useful maneuvers like hanging off the edges of structures to avoid detection, etc. There's also a fun dog tag collecting sub game where you can hold up/threaten enemies into dropping their tags that then unlock items if you collect enough. This game hinges on its story, and it's mostly thrilling all the way through, despite an ending that goes a bit off the rails. "Sons of Liberty" doesn't reach the greatness of the first game. That's not to say it isn't entertaining as hell.Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater"Snake Eater" is the third game in the "MGS" series, but the first game chronologically in the timeline, and takes place during the Cold War in 1964, where "Naked Snake" is tasked with stopping a nuclear-equipped tank in the jungles of the USSR. It's important to note that this is not the same Snake from the previous 2 games. If you're familiar with the mythology then you no doubt already know who he is. The story this time isn't quite as serious, and actually has a "James Bond" inspired opening credit sequence. There are still harrowing moments, as when Snake gets captured by Volgin, etc. Three characters in particular besides Snake are allowed an unusual amount of depth: young Ocelot, who later becomes one of the series' main villains and here first develops his obsession with revolvers; Eva, a seductress and spy whose loyalties aren't altogether clear; and The Boss, the legendary female soldier and former mentor of Naked Snake. What's new to "Snake Eater" are the systems that maintain Snake's health, which include eating food scavenged from within the environment (snakes for example) and curing yourself after taking damage (like removing a bullet with a knife and then applying the appropriate medical treatment). Also new is the ability to change camouflage on the fly to better blend in and help avoid being spotted by enemy patrols. These are great additions. I enjoyed "Snake Eater" more than "Sons of Liberty." The boss battles are better and more numerous (the best of which is the sniper The End), and the story never falters. Is it as great as the first game? Maybe not, but then few games are.Vita version:This Vita collection includes the "Substance" version of "MGS2" (including: Boss Survival, Casting Theater, 300 VR missions, and 200 alternate missions) and the "Subsistance" version of "MGS3" (including: "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2," skill challenge missions, side story missions, and a new user-controlled camera). "MGS3" on Vita looks and runs much better than its 3DS counterpart but doesn't include the ability to crouch-walk as on 3DS. The analog controls work mostly well but can be a bit finicky here and there when extreme precision is needed. The only real omission is an upgraded "MGS: Peace Walker," which is included with the console version of this collection. When all is said and done, this is one of the must-have Vita releases.--- 5 STARS ---5Ah Nostalgia The very first game that I owned on the Playstation 2 was Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. When I purchased my PS Vita this was on my list of games that I must have. Not only did it come with one of my favorite Metal Gear games, it included MGS3: Snake Eater. I never got to play Snake Eater when it was originally released. Hailed as one of the best MGS games at the time, I had to play that one first.I found both games to be a great amount of fun. I have beaten MGS2 so many times when I originally owned it; I was quick to run through it as I remembered where mostly everything is. It was great fun and brought back a lot of great memories.MSG3: Snake Eater is a different beast all together, this game was awesome. I loved the camo system that rated how you are actually blending in with your current environment. I loved the story and of course the dialog between characters (Hideo Kojima loves him some cut scenes). The only issues I have are with the controls. This isn t a game breaker but it does take some getting used to. I would constantly push the stick where I though Snake/Big Boss/Riden would go but they ended up going the opposite way. Not a huge deal but it took a bit to get used to.If you own a Vita and you don t own this game you are doing yourself a disservice.4and the games look very nice on the VitaPros: It's MGS 2&3 on the go, and the games look very nice on the Vita. If you like the MGS series, you'll like having these games on the go. You also still get the original MSX versions of Metal Gear 1&2 accessible through MGS3's menu.Cons:The controls aren't the same as on console because of the lack of buttons, so certain actions will be mapped to the touch screen or require button combinations. The games don't run at 60 fps like they do on PS3/XBOX 360. You also don't get Peace Walker in this collection.4Just what I orderedIt arrived in perfect condition, no cracked case or damaged.5Looks good, plays good, is goodOh, if only it had Peace Walker... No matter, MGS2 and 3 both look and play beautifully on the Vita and it's a must have for Vita owners even if you've played both titles before. And if you missed out on Subsistence for the PS2, Metal Gears 1 and 2 are included in this package.5If you have a Vita, or thinking of getting one... BUY THIS FANTASTIC CLASSIC.Played this game on PS2, still gonna play it. This game is pretty damn good for the Vita.Graphics: Graphics are 720p (higher than the PS2 version)Controls: I don't know why people are saying the controls suck or "it's too sensitive". They are just the way they need to be.Deal: It brings MGS2 and MGS3, alongside many other extras, WHATS NOT TO LIKE.5Metal Gear ImmortalizedThis is my first time playing any MGS game, although I have been interested in the series for quite some time. I have heard a lot of good things about this franchise, and I was not disappointed. This is simply an enhanced combination of the second and third Metal Gear Solid games. I did however hear that the Xbox and PS3 versions have Peace Walker on them as well, and that left me slightly disappointed. Fortunately, Metal Gear Solid 3 makes up for this. The third game is by far the better of the two in this collection (although the second one is really great too.) I highly recommend this game for any Metal Gear enthusiast or anyone who wants to get into the Metal Gear Solid franchise, although you may want to go with the Xbox or PS3 version if you want Peace Walker as well.5Amazing gamesSadly, the PS Vita version does not include Peace Walker, but you can purchase it from the PS Store and map the second analog stick for an even more enjoyable experience than the PSP version I love so dearly. I remember playing these ground breaking expansive games on the PS2 back in the day and here they are in the palm of my hand. No, it isn't the visual marvel that is Killzone Mercenary or Uncharted Golden Abyss, but the graphics hold up for games that are over 15 years old. If you enjoy stealth games and espionage then you need to buy this game for your Vita. If you don't own a Vita this should be your que to go and buy one because it is an AMAZING console that was way before it's time.5Wow, what entertainment in such a small package as the PS Vita! This has two of my favorite games ever! I remember when Metal Gear Solid 2 came out and everyone was shocked that you didn t play as Snake but as Raiden. At first they hated it but after playing it it became a classic. Raiden is a great character! Almost on par with Snake although he is a little whiny but that gives him his charm. Such great games. Classics without a doubt. I ve played these two games over and over. I have never done that except for Metroid and especially the ones on the Gameboy Advance. Do yourselves a real treat and pick these great classics up. I remember playing them on the big screen but I can t believe how well the Vita brings these wonderful games to life and is played on such a small system! Love this package!5A must have for any Metal Gear fan! These are two of the best Metal Gear games ever made, IMO. And they look absolutely amazing on the Vita! I've been a die hard MGS fan since the early days on the PS1. I've played them all. Being able to go back and play these two, is just absolute bliss. They've added touch screen controls for selecting your equipment and weapons which is pretty neat. It also comes with Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid 2 from the NES. It's in the menus. You'll notice in the review some people rate the game badly because of the control scheme. It isn't BAD, but I can totally see how someone new to the series who's just starting here may find it a bit awkward at first. DONT let that discourage you. You'll get used to it, and see just how amazing these two games really are.If you're a Metal Gear fan or looking to get into the series, and have the Vita, or thinking about getting a Vita, this is a must have! It's a no brainer. The story is amazing, the graphics are amazing, and the gameplay is really smooth! You can't go wrong here. I highly reccomend buying this!5
