Great stuffHere's where you can't judge an album by its cover. Just one classic song after another. Impeccable songwriting. Singing that is a pure joy to listen to. And the arrangements are spot on. Great record.5One of my favorite albums. I love that these classics are being ...One of my favorite albums. I love that these classics are being re-released in vinyl because the originals have usually been improperly stored, resulting in warping. The hellfire red is an excellent touch. Puts the fear of god right into you.5Five StarsCOOL STUFF!!5Kids please listen! What more can be said about the Louvin's that the most seasoned critic has not already elaborated upon in the past fifty years. With that said, my first impression of this music was that the harmonies and genuine soul are extremely impactful. This is coming from someone who is not a country or american music enthusiast, let alone into religious based country, but I was so impressed that I went out and quickly dropped $150 on their "Close Harmony" box set. So to all you parents out there, buy this essential music and teach your children about this vital chapter in american music.5Jeweled CrownThe cover is worth the sticker price alone. Truely, one of the great album covers of all time. As the liner notes will attest, the Louvins concieved & built it themselves, risking serious injury when the kerosene coated rocks began to explode behind them. Prophetic as that sounds, if this record were a book, you could judge it by the cover. The contents are truely as haunting, campy, beautiful & passionate as that manic expression on Brother Ira's face.Sinners be warned, this is Gospel music. So yes, there is that cloying, BE SAVED OR DAMNED message behind it all. But these passive-agressive tactics are undermined by the Louvin's bittersweet sound. These guys sing like hell bent angels, clinging desperately to the darkest, lonely cloud in Heaven's outlands. Behind the unintentional camp of self penned ditties like, "Satan Is Real" is a deep rooted cry for mercy. The barnstorming glee of "There's A Higher Power" follows & is as infectious as Hank Williams' classic, "I Saw The Light".Much has been said of this albums' influence on the late, Gram Parsons. His faithful rendition of "The Christian Life" is an obvious example. But I can't help but wonder what the Louvin's thought of the likes of GILDED PALACE OF SIN. Their sacred sound is all over it. So if you're a Burritos/Parsons fan---this is indispensible. My personal favorite is "He Can Be Found". Not only does it represent this duo at their subtle best, but when each brother takes their solo, it's likely to stop you in your tracks. It's the waving grass over the fire & brimstone of "Satan's Jeweled Crown" & "Drunkard's Doom". Another standout is, "Are You Afraid To Die" which is as raw & honest as popular music gets in any genre.Since hearing this, I've sought out a few other Louvin Bros. albums, but keep coming back to this one. Without a doubt SATAN IS REAL is their masterpiece. Brush your religious prejudices aside & dig down deep into the grave of this one. You're certain to be rewarded.5Good experienceNo problems5Satan is still real!Excellent sound quality of this old classic. The gatefold cover strays a bit from the ambience of the original, but that unique and gripping cover photo still grabs your attention. All in all a nice package if you don't want to pay hundreds for an original in very fine condition.5Finally, some good Christian musicI don't know about you, but I am SICK of these dang Christian songs that are all written around the G and Cadd9 and Dsus4 chords, with the big fake instruments and whiny male singers, these lethargic tracks which could pass for Third Eye Blind if they ever broke 88 beats per minute. There's never any theology to make up for the musical poverty of these songs, either -- they're only ever about that non-judgmental personal relationship with Jesus, and they address the Lord in the second person with phrases like "you know me better than I know myself," "you are THE ONE," "you save me." You know the type. I don't mean to disparage my own religion but I fail to see what makes such tracks meaningfully different from the rest of the awful love songs on the market.Enter the Louvin Brothers. Their frigidly old-fashioned harmonies, threadbare arrangements and resolutely anti-rocking country rhythms are alien to my own ears; they are the auditory equivalent of those cold nineteenth-century daguerrotypes of American families in their Sunday best, refusing to smile (understandable when you learn that the shutter had to stay open for thirty seconds or more) for the camera. Whether or not life ever got more raucous (and for Ira Louvin it most certainly did), the popular media of the past will testify only to that era's piety and straight laces. But what's noteworthy is that the Louvin Brothers put that ethos to record before it disappeared from life, and its uprightness and almost inhospitable clarity stands in stark opposition to the slushy permissiveness of our own era and its equally slushy music. I also appreciate their willingness to testify to their theology -- "The River of Jordan" and "He Can Be Found," two of the friendliest songs on the CD, are also two of the most affirmative about Christian principles and the Scriptural and experiential reasons for them. The ones with "drunkard" in the title exhibit that unfortunate American Protestant allergy to alcohol in any quantity, and every time the Louvins mention Satan or wife-beating or descent into hell it startles against the major keys in which every song is written; but then, I've already said that I find it difficult to relate to this kind of music. Maybe as I purify my own habits I will identify more with this record, but there is something stillborn about this kind of Christianity, something that seems better off dead. Probably it has to do with its telos or something. Anyway, I enjoy this Louvin Brothers CD under certain conditions, and even if it hasn't dated very well it still offers a trivial contrast to our sludgy, dissipated time. You don't really need it if, like me, you don't feel much interest in its music or its themes after the first two or three listens.3Not 180 gram vinylThis record is Not 180 gram vinyl. Although, it is worth the money.3Great cdGreat cd5
