An absolute revelation!I learned of this soundtrack after viewing the film's trailer online. First off, I cannot believe that I missed an opportunity to experience the film in a theater. The trailer moved me to tears and the soundtrack is every bit as incredible. Who knew that the core of the Motown sound was the music so masterfully supplied by The Funk Brothers. Not to take anything away from any of the legendary singers of the original songs, but the truth is in the music. This soundtrack is a celebration of that. Meshell Ndegeocello's blues inspired re-interpretations of "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" and "Cloud Nine" capture the cautionary elements of those songs. Joan Osborne's rendition of "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" takes us to church. She reaches deep inside herself towards the end and comes up with a emotionally charged performance that simply moves. Just when I didn't think it possible to do so, Chaka Khan and the Funk Brothers breathe new life into the once again relevant "What's Going On." Congratulations on the Grammy award for this song! Chaka and Montell Jordan's duet on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is a near carbon copy of Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell's classic version. My jaw just dropped from the opening cords of "Reach Out I'll Be There." The Funk Brothers and Gerald Levert are absolutely on point. On "Shotgun" Gerald Levert again reminds us what a real gut bucket soul singer sounds like. Tom Scott tries his best but comes up just a little bit short, but who can really compete with the memory of Jr. Walker's sax? After several listenings, I learn to love it though. You can hear in Gerald's voice the joy he must have felt in performing with such an unheralded, but truly treasured group of musicians that are now deservedly receiving their due.5Truly Outstanding Music DocumentaryDisclaimer: I was born and raised in North Detroit and grew up with Motown in the 60's. The soundtrack of my life! This movie is extraordinary! It captures the heart and soul of "Detroit's unsung musical heroes". Obviously a labor of love by Allan Slutsky and the producers and director, The Funk Brothers finally got their due, but not before several of them had already passed on. They re all gone now except for Joe Messina who is over 90 years old.To a one, the performances by the Funk Brothers - fronted by non-Motown singers - are terrific! Especially outstanding are Joan Osborne's "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted", Chaka Khan's "What's Goin' On" and Ben Harper's "Grapevine".The film admirably frames the music and players against its social times, emphasizing Marvin Gaye's contributions and "Cloud Nine".5WE DIG THE FUNK!Joan Osborne's version of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted just might move you to tears. Incredible rendition.Have wondered all these years about the fantastic musicians behind the great Motown sound: who were they? What were their names? Where did they come from?Well, the excellent documentary tells you all about them and just might make you buy the CD, as I have recently done.Grateful to all the talented folks for giving us so much great music over the years! Words are not enough!THANK YOU, FUNK BROTHERS!!!5Classic MotownI bought this CD after previously buying the DVD and watching the documentary of the Funk Brothers. Joan Osborne (whom I never heard of before this album or DVD was released) is astounding. Her rendition of "What becomes of the broken hearted" is unmatched by anyone ever. The CD sounds excellent and could not be improved in any way. Instrumental's like "Bernadette" are very well crafted with different instruments coming in as the song requires. I would buy this one again or for gifts as it is one you won't put in your CD file and not play again. I keep my copy in my car and play it several times a week. It's great fun and professionally packaged..one of the best packaged CD's I have seen so far. They did a good job on this one and it shows...in every way.5Music With Heart and SoulI first heard these cuts on the documentary of the same name which chronicles the rise of some of the best music the U.S. has ever produced by musicians who are generally unknown. These guys were the Funk Brothers, the house musicians for Motown. They wrote music; they improvised; they were enormously talented, and they were as responsible for the great Motown hits as the vocalists most of us know.Get the DVD of the documentary -- Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) also from Amazon -- and get this soundtrack. It's foot tapping, hip shaking good.5There is no music better than the Motown sound of the Funk Brothers and ...There is no music better than the Motown sound of the Funk Brothers and the classic hits revisited by remarkably talented voices whose vocals sometimes are better than the original artists.5Fabulous soundtrack!Saw the movie, loved it... and the music! So had to get this soundtrack. This music was done by members of the Funk Bros., surrounded by some excellent musicians. And, I'm now a certified Joan Osborne fan!Like Motown? See the movie, you'll want this soundtrack too!5A must have Biography of MotownI saw this movie at a friends, and then I "had to have it in my Library" .. I think this movie is a great informative movie of the Motown, and the Funk Brothers, who were the back up band to a lot of the Motown songs .. i think that also this movie would be good for teachers, to show students, as an education in music . The soundtrack is incredible ... especially Joan Osborne.... wow .. she really can sing these old motown songs .. This is a Keeper for sure .... the DVD was sent fast to me from this reliable seller.... am very stoked to own the movie now .. for a great price.5IF YOU PLAY BASS OR LOVE MUSIC BUY THIS 2 DISC CD NOW!Being a music lover and an musician, this 2 disc set was too good to pass up. Growing up in the 60's & 70's, I always knew this music was more intricate underneath than it's beautiful heartfelt melodies would imply.I played in many bands over the past 30+ years and I have been praised by many for my ability to improvise, but I'm glad in my younger days, I wasn't aware of what was going on underneath those Motown soulful vocals...if I had, I may have never touched my bass again! James Jamerson is the kind of bassist that makes even the best players feel humbled. This 2 disc set is packed with the Funk Brothers classic tracks with famous singers stepping in, showing it's the band that's the star on these tracks and anybody with a voice can sound good singing this stuff! As a bonus, these discs also feature some bass tracks from some of Jamerson's most memorable tunes. This is money well spent for any bass player wanting to improve their game or any music lover who wants a deeper understanding of this incredible timeless music! It's also a great listen too!I recommend you buy this along with the 2 disc DVD Standing in the Shadows of Motown. It's a fascinating bio and there is plenty of great recorded music on it as well!5For the Motown generationThis was a gift for my husband who was thrilled to have a chance to enjoy the story of the Funk Brothers whose music tastes were shaped by the Motown sound. This band actually played on ALL the classic Motown hits for such greats as Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, etc. The Funk Brothers were indeed 'Standing in the Shadows'. This story should be viewed not only by the Motown generation but by anyone who would like to take a magical journey back to a golden age of music.5
