Vanilla StarTrekIs it me or was there something lost about the characters? The first two movies were action, yes, but with great interpersonal dynamics. These people seemed to be in a daze, even in some of the action scenes. Every once in awhile you'd see some of that StarTrek spark but not enough to carry the movie. I'm a long time fan of StarTrek, I could probably quote all the dialogue from each series, and know the back stories on each character, so I was very disappointed with this movie. The villain was lack luster, didn't like him, didn't hate him, this movie needed a villain that was relentless, you absolutely really hated....The kind were you jump up and say 'Yeah!" when he gets his, not so here, his ships were scary but not him, I couldn't connect with Spock and Uhara's breakup, she seemed, 'ok' with it, and Spock had this silly expression on his face almost all thru this movie, and Kirk was unimaginative as wel, like he really didn't care what happened to anybody......sorry but this wasn't as good as the first two...the people in charge need to review the best ST episodes and take a hint.3Super Addition To The SeriesAs someone old enough to have viewed the original TV series back in the sixties, I think that "Beyond" would make Gene Roddenberry proud. Amazing what a half century of technical advances have done to production values that were far ahead of their time even way back when.I'm not a big fan of CGI for the sake of CGI. However, the technology really adds to the "feel" of the movie in ways that stone-age special effects just can't.Sure, it's fantastic and probably a bit over-the-top to a Trekkie purist, but time marches on and, in this case, it marched smartly and precisely.The plot makes good use of the usual characters and adds a few new ones that are quite interesting. I don't think that anyone can replace Leonard Nimoy as Spock, but Zachary Quinto comes pretty close. Anyway, how does one replace a legend?I'm too lazy to look up the name of the Casting Director but, he/she did one heck of a job. Karl Urban bears an amazing resemblance to DeForest Kelly and his interaction with Quinto brings back a lot of good memories of the original McCoy/Spock relationship. Zoe Saldana as Uhura adds a lot of depth to that role and John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg as Sulu, Chekov and Scott, respectively, handle their parts with professionalism.What can be said about Idris Elba that hasn't already been said? While his character (Krall) doesn't live up to the ultimate Star Trek villian (who else but Ricardo Montalban as Khan?) that's no reflection on his acting as some additional development of the character would not have wasted his talent. Somehow, they even got Jeff Bezos a bit part but I don't see an Oscar in his future. :-).Perhaps I missed something, but what did the "swarm" actually consist of? Were they some sort of nano-bots or something biological? In any case, the idea works and works well.If you're a die-hard Trekkie or just a casual fan of the franchise, "Beyond" will not disappoint.4Third Time Is a CharmThis was a superior 3rd installment to the Star Trek movie reboot!!!! Such a fun movie and a superior cast. I am an old school Trekkie so this is saying ALOT!!! I own every classic episode with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and the rest. I was truly hesitant to even see the first movie and was completely surprised and delighted to have so much fun with this new chapter in Star Trek history. This movie actually reminded me of the great old shows. There is an awesome new female, alien character that I just loved!!! So, YES, I can highly recommend this movie and also the first and the second. If you are new to the Star Trek world, jump in and try it all and go where no man has gone before......Star Trek style.5My favorite of the "nuTrek" movies. Just good classic fun.Overall I think this is the best and best written of the new Trek movies. It focuses largely more on the characters, character interactions and moments than it does on the over the top never ending action sequences. This is a fully stand alone story. You don't really need to have seen the prior two movies, certainly not the second. Just have a passing familiarity with the classic Trek characters and overall story. Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, USS Enterprise. If you know who these people are you are good to go.The story picks up in the middle of the Enterprises famous 5 year journey. And amazingly they hit it head on. Discussing and bringing forth the fatigue, the boredom, the routine that comes on from such a long journey. But luckily the ship is getting a resupply and shore leave stop at the Federations newest Starbase. The massive space snowglobe that is Yorktown station. From there they are dispatched on an emergency rescue mission (in full on Trek tradition the Enterprise is as always the ONLY ship in range.)And thus begins the movies first major action sequence. Like all such action sequences in modern movies, goes on far far longer than it is able to hold the viewers attention. To give ST Beyond credit, it is actually less guilty of this than most other modern movies. This one goes on only almost too long as opposed to much too long. Battle, destruction, running on walls, things falling, Enough Explosions to satiate Michael Bay.From there the crew are scattered on a remote planet. Most captured and enslaved by a nasty alien race. It is during this period that we get a tremendous amount of really really good character moments. The Spock/McCoy interactions are some of the best moments in any Trek movie, going back to the Shatner/Nimor/Kelly era. we meet the new badass alien battle chick (who I hope becomes a franchise regular. She was that much fun.) And we get to watch Star Trek being Star Trek and Kirk being Kirk. of a particular delight to Star Trek fans is the story draws heavily not simply from the original 1960's Star Trek, but it also ties it together incredibly well with the 2000's era Star Trek Enterprise prequel TV show. It bridges the gap unexpectedly.Negatives, yeah there are a few. The biggest involves the use of some glaring 20th century anachronisms far far too much. Much like the annoying Corvette scene at the begining of Star Trek 2009, we have a Kirk on a motorcycle scene that both feels wildly out of place, and does once again go on minutes too long. And the final climax or solution to the problem seems to come straight out of "Mars Attacks". It's jaw droppingly stupid. Although you can't hate it too much as it knows it is stupid, and fully takes ownership of the stupid, which makes it both more ok and rather meta.The only other flaw with the movie revolves around Idris Alba's bad guy. he feels under developed. Which is heartbreaking once we finally learn his backstory. Further add to this that they layered Alba under tons of prosthetics. Alba is one of the worlds current finest actors. But acting through prosthetics is a special skillset. Actors such as Ron Perlman have made a career of mastering it. Alba much like the similarly taleneted Oscar Issacs over in X-Men Apocalypse was far to confined and restricted in the makeup and suit. It muffled too much of what he brought to the role. It turned him into a mediocre throwaway villain instead of the more memorable Khan like antagonist he should have been.Given Anton Yeltsin's tragic death after making the movie, the final scene is amazing, heartrending and the perfect goodbye. Overall the movie is a much watch for Star Trek fans. And was one of the more fun genre movies in an overly crowded summer. Well worth owning and watching at home.5I liked this movieI liked this movie. I liked the characters. Especially the new female character that Scotty finds on the planet. Sorry I can't remember her name. I thought she was cool and really made the movie for me. I hope she is in future StarTrek movies. Some other parts of the movie drug a little. I think they were trying to get in too much action. I bought the UHD version of the movie and the video quality was excellent. Most of the scenes are a little dark so HDR helps.4Welcome home old friends - boldly going where the franchise has NOT gone before.I must admit that as a long time Star trek fan I was dubious about the first reboot movie establishing a new timeline for the original series concept. However, the second and third times I watched it I really warmed up to the characters and realized that the alternate timeline allowed the movies to go where the original series had not gone before. The second movie was better still even if the roles of the death scene between Spock and Kirk were reversed from the ending in the original "Wrath of Khan". Now here comes the third installment of the movies series and I couldn't be more pleased with it. Finally, we get to see the characters displaying the kind of personal interaction that made the original TV series so beloved. Irascible "Bones" and stoic Spock are back ! Chris Pine is maturing into his role as captain Kirk so I feel more at home with him being in the captain's chair. There is plenty of action for the fans and the cinematography is excellent.I remember wanting to watch the original show while I was getting my degree but our dorm house was full of jocks who kept voting us down on watching the show in our common room so three friends and I went across the street to a dorm that was unoccupied because there was a TV set there in a locked common room. We became experts in pulling the pins out of the door's hinges and removing the door so we could watch the show. When we were done we put the door back in it's proper place.Other reviewers have done a better job than I detailing the show and it's plot lines so I'll just say the as a long time trek fan I believe that most trek lovers will not be disappointed with this movie. I look forward to another movie with this cast since the new timeline is already so different from the original.I was saddened to learn of the death of Anton Yelchin who played Checkov and wonder who will replace him. That said, next movie in the new series please !53* for the franchise ... being kind ... poor screenplay/storyline, weak actingI write reviews only when I can add something new or when a product is superb (or awful).Me read sci fi since grade school: every Asimov book (and Lucky Star ), Heinlein, Herbert, Andre Norton, Poul Anderson, Scott Card. When science left sci fi I left and recent decades read non-fiction.Watched Star Trek in B&W when it started when I was in college, great show, movies enjoyed all (before this Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still ). Star Wars excellent although #7 was weak.This movie very unimaginative. Gene Roddenberry is writhing in his grave. There is zero "science" in the movie, an elementary/JR school plot set in the future ... 'the bad guys are out to get us'. To be fair other movies have been similar, most Star Trek not.* Cinematography excellent - 4K on a large OLED screen, special effects good but somewhat unrealistic (even for sci fi). To future viewers ... movies are more than special effects.* Plot is disjointed without a coherent storyline other than the big external threat (blast from a past movie). The plot progression is unrealistic (even for sci fi). In the middle of the story we see 3 separate storylines with poor explanation of what we are seeing and how it connects, relevance to the plot. Shifts between the broken storylines and transitions from one to the next are poor.* If you watch chaotic action scenes and don t think about the reality of what you are seeing (e.g. flames in space), it s ok even if a bit silly. If you stop and think about what you are seeing in the action sequences, it looks stupid. The science aspect is strange power on a ship totally crashed, powering up a crashed ship 100 year old. These ships must have better redundant and fail safe power systems better than an A10 fighter. The motorcycles on a starship were really stupid.* Movie has the now Star Trek feel good ending, a throwback to other movies. It may have worked in those but it is now very stale. We long watchers know this is to pump us up for the next big adventure (already in the can as this is debuting). We are Hans and Frans we are here to pump you up."* Acting is variable, some characters Ok, almost good, some weak. Acting and delivery of lines at the beginning of the movie almost caused me to shut it off and get rid of it. As a decades long season ticket holder to a top theater company with excellent acting, overall it was mediocre. As the movie progresses and actors get involved in the action , acting improves and the quality of acting (or lack of) goes away. Amusingly, Spock (the stoic) is fine.Conclusion I m fine with having watched this although in retrospect would not have done so. I m surprised at the high ratings from viewers but happy for them they found enjoyment. Weaknesses 1) poor screen play plot/storylines (1-2*), and 2) weak acting (2-3*). On acting non-Federation woman Jala was good, the villain good at end, Spock in character.1st gen Star Trek movies VG-E, 2d generation excellent. Too bad we can t bring James Tiberius Kirk and Jean Luc Picard out of the bull pen. We need them?! Alas, no more for me. For the franchise (only), 3*, otherwise is a clear 2* at best. Probably should have lowered from 3* to 2* to be honest. I never expect anyone to agree so decide for yourself.To future viewers ... special effects are fine, don't make a movie. Suggest you read what others say about the screenplay plot and acting. If I hadn't bought the 4K disc, I would have turned it off3A great addition to the ST story and definitely worth the moneyJoyfully goofy film , wildly colorful and beautiful to look at with one laugh out loud awesome scene featuring the beastie boys that will become a legend.The plot doesnt hold up against scrutiny but is easy to overlook as this film is so enjoyable. One thing that always gets me about ST films as well as ther sci fi films of this ilk is that you see hosts of humans yet only one or two representations of all the other exotic , intelligent lifeforms that make up life in the Federation and ,really , would it have killed the director to include at least SOME of the established races? Lets see a couple Andorian officers in th city , not necessarily speaking roles but just be present on screen for a couple minutes or even seconds. Its a minor observation and not a 'complaint' and ultimately doesnt have a negative impact on how fun this film is.5Love the reboot!I grew up with the original Star Trek cast and have never really liked any of the other off-shoots of the series. However, I have to say that I am really enjoying this reboot of the original series. By going "back in time" to see how the relationships developed, I feel a new breath has been breathed into this series. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin all just embody their characters so well. I have enjoyed all 3 of these Star Trek movies and hope that they continue to make many more. And, oh yeah! Love the new theme music which has shades of the original in it as well.5this movie is good. We've watched it several times nowWe weren't too sure what to expect after the first two reboot movies. I'm a nearly life-long Trekkie who didn't really care for the Kelvin timeline and the liberties taken, and my husband is a new recruit who can't get enough of the original series. It's unsettling for me to see far more advanced technology in a Star Trek film than was available in Next Generation or succeeding series. However, this movie is good. We've watched it several times now. There are a couple of scenes I leave the room for, but my husband enjoys the whole thing, beginning to end. We're wondering if Carol Marcus will be brought back or forgotten, but Jaylah certainly filled the female heroine roll. The movie gives us both hope for future movies, although we deeply feel the loss of the original Spock and the reboot Chekov, both of whom were splendid and irreplaceable in their roles.5
