Terrific!!An absolutely devastating performance! The combined forces of these two provincial German orchestras play their collective hearts out in this live performance. The audience is very quiet, except for one minute of deserved enthusiastic applause at the work's conclusion.Maestro Raiskin is a conductor to watch. If this is not the beginning of a complete Shostakovich symphony cycle, I hope he gets to record the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 14th symphonies of Shostakovich.Terrific!!!5Controlled and PowerfulProbably the most irrelevant thing I can think of while writing this review is getting it straight that this is the effort of two combined orchestras. They, in this case, act as one.Daniel Raiskin has certainly made a name for himself with this live performance of the Shostakovich 4th symphony. The orchestra seems steely and controlled yet has powerful outbursting climaxes. There is much to say about the rhythmic sculpting and drive that he lends to the performance. This is a 4th symphony that breathes too. The large nebulous outer movements are given the space to express every note.Yet I wouldn't call this an unbridled success. Where Raiskin is strong in structure and etching out the mystery of this collossal symphony he also loses a bit of the warm blooded feel to the work. Raiskin's 4th is a cold blooded monster which at times can come across as being almost sterile. While this isn't enough to turn me off to the Shostakovich 4th neither can I wholeheartly recommend it.Raiskin's Shostakovich 4th in this recording marks itself as being different from the everyday. It's closest cousin in my estimation is Haitink's Grammy Award winning CSO performance of the same work. The playing is top notch and I got the CD which has a cardboard instead of jewel case holder. There are a few miscellaneous clicks and pops which seem to be quite minor. Otherwise the sound is top notch and it is hard to tell that this is a live performance. The recording garners four stars because it is only very very good and does not blow my mind.Shostakovich: Symphony No. 4 [Includes DVD]4A new standard for this glorious masterpiece!Since the times of Eugene Ormandy at the front of the Philadelphia Orchestra, I had not listened such barbaric and overwhelming performance of this score. It's such the fierceness, paganism and wilderness of this version that obligates us to rethink and obviously to acknowledge this talented conductor has really reached a new standard for the 4th.I think this is the most complex, dense and compelling of all Dmitri Shostakovich's symphonies. And perhaps, this reality had generated just a few number of previous readings are worthy to consider. But believe me this performance has it all that you request. Power, energy and mercurial drive. Don't even to think it twice, and go for this recording which I include it among the top ten recordings of the year.Kudos!!!5This is an outstanding disc offering an inspirational and deeply rewarding view of a complex compositional masterpieceThis disc is a compilation made from two live performances in 2009. The only evidence of an audience being present comes at the end with appropriate applause. The recordings are so well matched that the listener would be unaware of which parts of the recording belonged to either occasion. The final disc offers superb stereo sound which encompasses the considerable dynamic range of the music as well as delivering a believable acoustic and wide sound-stage. There is no spotlighting of individual instruments even though considerable clarity is achieved. The performance itself has an undeniable sense of authority about it. That, coupled with the excellence of the playing of the two orchestras involved and the technical quality of the recording, makes this disc one of considerable note. There are two broad approaches that conductors bring to this very varied and deeply dramatic score. There are those who adopt a rapid and driven approach, examples being Barshai, Chung and Jarvi , and there are those who adopt a weightier approach and this performance by Raiskin belongs to that category. His two lengthy outer movements take longer than any of those mentioned above for instance while his central movement is, surprisingly, a little quicker than most. The balance is therefore slightly different. However, these timing comparisons only offer a very superficial clue as to the nature of the performance as there are so many tempi and mood changes within the outer movements especially.Raisin has come to this recording having lived with the work for many years starting with the recording of Kondrashin s first performance a performance that Raisin s father, a prominent musicologist, actually attended in concert. This background has probably contributed to that sense of authority mentioned earlier. There is no more telling point perhaps than the final massive climax of the work which is then followed by a dying away into nothingness. Raiskin emphases the emotional power of this final section by refusing to drive the tempo on. This controlled tension adds considerably to the power of the conclusion and the emptiness of the aftermath. The orchestra rises magnificently to these two contrasting challenges and this final section demonstrates in microcosm the essential character of Raiskin s whole reading and the way in which it communicates. This complex work benefits enormously from a variety of approaches and the conductors listed above all offer enormous individual insights that will be known and appreciated by collectors. To that number must be added this recording by Raiskin, and some will even place it above several of those alternatives. Whether or not this is the best overall version in what is becoming a very competitive field, there can be little doubt that its quality is such as to make this a compulsory purchase for interested collectors. In summary this is an outstanding disc and offers an inspirational and illuminating view of a complex compositional masterpiece in excellent sound.5
