Can't get enough of Nicholas SparksNicholas Sparks is by far one of my favorite authors ever. That being said, I rated this one more harshly than other books because I expected something that would make me laugh, cry, and sigh with how amazing the love is, like all of his other books did. Sadly, I could only give this one four stars. The fist thing that just didn't do it for me was the romance between Dawson and Amanda. I could tell they loved each other by the recap of their past and how they fell in love, but the present time in the book that they spent together didn't radiate the normal, intense passion that has been in his other books. I really enjoyed the main characters but I didn't connect with them. I wish we could have actually read about them falling in love in high school because then their love would have been more real 20 years down the road. So I was a bit bored in the first half of the book because I expected more passion and drama than what I actually got. The second half of the book, though, is what really saved the story. So many things happen that my heart was actually racing because I was so anxious to figure out what was going to happen next. Once the initial twist happened though, the book was slightly predictable so I knew what was going to happen in the last chapter of the book well before it actually occurred. Because of this, I didn't cry like I have in many of Sparks' other books, but I was still happy with the ending (though I would have been happier with a happier ending...). So overall The Best of Me was a very enjoyable book, but I didn't fall in love with it like I have with all of his other books. I still can't wait to see what they do with the movie for this! Yet another Nicholas Sparks creation to look forward too :)4Don't botherIt was corny and unrealistic. His books have gone from romantic to nauseating over the years and this is no exception. Amanda is childish. So she has problems in her marriage, who doesn't? So as soon as she sees her first love runs into his arms. And Dawson, never dated, had sex ever again because he never got over Amanda. Seriously?! Finished it because I did purchase it but oh no. What a waste!!!1Fairly Predictable - but does it really matter? This book took a LONG while to "get there". To reach that point of really knowing what the purpose of each character really was for the story as a whole. But when this book "got there" it all made perfect sense. Sparks' does a great job introducing just the right amount of supporting characters to keep things interesting. The "twists" in this book were fairly predictable - but I really don't think it matters much. This isn't an overly lengthy novel droning on and on about nothing at all - wasting your time. This is a well-written, smartly-organized novel about how love really can last forever... even if not in the way you might expect. This book had a touch of paranormal to it - which usually strikes me as unnecessary, unrelatable, and unbelievable. One of this books' major positives is the chapter length. I do not like to stop my reading in the middle of a chapter - but sometimes you have to when they are 80pages long (annoying). Sparks' keeps these chapters at a satisfying length - aided by the continual change on POV throughout the story.Seriously - all of Sparks' novels are amazing - this is just a "middle of the roader" - but still worth the read. :)4Just what I needed! An easy read. Loved the story even though it s kind of similar to others in many ways. I knew how some of it would transpire but the way this was written really kept me engaged to the end. Life does have a way of working out even if it is different than what we imagined. Love is love. And there are many kinds as this book showed. Really enjoyable book!4Spectacular reading- helped my 18 hour plane ride go by quickly! If you ever had a first love that got away, this is the book. It was a real page turner. It brought out a range of emotions, including tears. I really enjoyed this book. I read reviews where people said it was predictable. Maybe so at times, but I say it is a true romantic story. He wrote it with other characters involved in the story, and left us to fill in the details of their lovemaking. He tells a story, not just focusing on jumping in and out of bed. I found this very refreshing. I've read 2 more books by him since this read. I've found an author who actually tells a story. At first I thought I knew how the ending would be, but boy was I wrong. A funeral brings two high school lovers back together, but only for a short time. An old man's last wishes, a bar fight, car accident, and a one in a million chance of getting a transplant will keep you reading this book untill the very end.I'm not a big romance novel fan, but I tend to find myself enjoying Nicholas Sparks books anyway. I love how his stories are really well developed and thought-provoking, rather than just revolving around the physical aspects of love as many other romance novels do. "The Best of Me" had to be one of Nicholas Sparks' best novels yet. Yes, the basic theme is one that's been done over and over again - two high school sweethearts having to let go because real life interferes, and then running into each other again years later. But this story is so much more than that. You find yourself really sympathizing with the characters and understanding how difficult their situations are. Nicholas Sparks captures and holds your attention until the very end in this book, and this story is one that I'm sure will stick with me for a long time. The Best of Me follows the struggles of Amanda as she must decide between her imperfect family and her first love, Dawson. Her decision is heart-wrenching, and the events that ensue will inevitably bring tears to your eyes. Amanda discovers what really matters in life, and Dawson is able to truly give the best of himself to Amanda in a shocking manner. In true Nicholas Sparks fashion, The Best of Me is simultaneously heart-warming, melancholy, and suspenseful. How Dawson gives life to Amanda is sure to change your view on what is important to you.4First Novel I've Read By Nicholas Sparks--Loved!I decided to read a book by Nicholas Sparks that I hadn't already watched in movies. Let me just say that I loved this book so much. The writing is beautifully done. It wasn't hard for me to follow the different characters, either. It wasn't what I expected, nor what I wanted. It was even better. As another person mention, 'It was tragically beautiful.' That is the perfect way to describe the book. I will not watch the movie because I don't want it to taint the beautiful personal movie I played in my head while reading.I see that others say that he has had better books than this. That makes me excited to read more novels by him, seeing that I loved this one.5Not the Best of His, but pretty goodDawson Cole is a loveable enough character. He is from the wrong side of the tracks and has every chance to turn out like the rest of his family, but in spite of it all he gets out of Oriental, a small southern town, and becomes a derrick hand on an oil rig. We see flashbacks to when he first met Amanda Collier in high school, their early romance over the summer of their junior year, and how they became very close during their senior year, in 1984. SO that she can have her dreams he breaks things off, but never really lets go of her memory. When Tuck Hostetler, their common connection to the town, dies (you know someone has to die... it is a N. Sparks novel) they are both summoned back to town by the estate lawyer. The book centers around them spending the weekend reminising about their school days crush and the memorial for Tuck. There is plenty of intrigue from Dawson's kin and the story of Tuck's life as it is revealed. But I have to admit the story was good but I did not care for the premise of a single man and a married woman. I have read all of N. Sparks' books with the exception of the vacation blog with his brother and this one if one of his better stories. I just wish I was not cringing over her being married through most of the book. Also note: there is a typo on my book .. page 101, line three, the word "they" is left out. Yep I am OCD and I just had to throw that in (but please do not check my spelling as I can not spell to save my life) :)4Heartwrenching!Nicholas Sparks never disappoints. This is a poignant story about chances: random chances, lost chances, and second chances. A story of families, relationships, regrets and redemption. About once-in-a-lifetime, enduring love; lost, found, denied, and eventually recaptured. It's a story of honor, duty, responsibility, purpose, selflessness, and fate. This book will make you fall in love; will break your heart, will make you cry, and just maybe, it might even bring a little smile to your heart at the end. What more could you ask for! This is "the best of" Nicholas sparks!5"Best of Me" was definitely not Nicholas Sparks' best workI was in the mood for a good, wholesome, feel-good love story. Every once in a while Sparks delivers. The last book of his I picked up, "The Longest Ride" was one of those feel goody types so I had high hopes for this one. The first couple chapters of "The Best of Me" were ok...just Ok. After the first few chapters the story quickly went downhill. I personally felt it was confusing the way it introduced new character viewpoints each chapter. Sometimes this can work in the author's favor but in this case we never really got to know any characters in depth. Also, without giving too much away I felt storylines were recycled from other well known novels of his - i.e., parents don't approve of leading lady's boyfriend, fight ensues, couple breaks up, leading lady moves on (but not entirely), long separation & then reunion, mother of leading lady shows up at house to talk some sense into leading lady (but maybe to encourage her to follow her own path)....sounding familiar? *cough*The Notebook*cough*.Semi-Spoiler Alert!!No happy ending here...not even a semi-happy ending where they grow old and die together. The ending to this story was rushed and sadly predictable and left a lot to be desired. "Best of Me" was definitely not Nicholas Sparks best work. I'm surprised by how many 4 and 5 stars it received.1Typical Nicholas Sparks BookI like to read a Sparks novel occasionally as a break from more serious literature. They seem like well written romances with good plots and characters. However, the endings have become predictable and never 100% happy. From the beginning of this book, I kept thinking about how it would end and if someone would get killed.Dawson and Amanda had been high school sweethearts even though they came from "opposite sides of the tracks" in Oriental, NC. They split up due to pressures by her parents. She ended up married to a dentist and they had children. Dawson went to prison for four years for accidentally killing the town's doctor when driving a vehicle. Later he worked on offshore rigs in the Gulf.Dawson and Amanda met up again over 20 years later when Tuck a mutual friend and father figure in Oriental died. His will requested that they scatter his ashes at a cottage that had been owned by him and his deceased wife. Two of Dawson's cousins hated him and made multiple attempts on his life.At some point the ending became very predictable and typical of Sparks. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it. At least up to the predictable ending.4
