Customer Reviews

DisappointedThe story started off really good and I thought I was in for a really good book, but before long it became long and drawn out with too much needless talk about photography and decorating and other stuff. I skimmed or skipped over a lot just to get to the end. Really disappointed after the first few chapters. I don't know how this book received as many good reviews as it did. I wouldn't recommend it.1Typical Nora RobertsTypical boy-meets-girl from Nora Roberts. Boy is manly, handsome. Girl is self- confident, gorgeous. Her father, who happens to be a mass murderer and rapist, is a deacon in the local church. Her mother is, of course, a pathetic, submissive wife. Once her father is imprisoned, Naomi ends up living with her two gay uncles who are portrayed as if they have no faults.. Loving, no end to their wealth, Naomi grows under their care with her brother, Mason, after she finds her father's rape victim in the forest. Fast forward to today, where Naomi meets and falls in love with Zander. Of course there's again no end of money, no real "job" keeping them back from life; no constraints keeping Naomi from going hog wild on a home remodel, buying furniture, and getting a friendly dog. Story is mildly intriguing and kept me going. Did not like the obvious anti-Christian (all bad), pro-gay (all good) bias of the book, nor the typical and obvious masculine and feminine stereotypes of the main characters. Otherwise, I did enjoy the main storyline of the mass rapist and Naomi's,struggle to escape her dark past.3Torture to read this. The only reason I completed this story was due to my book club. I imagine she sells enough books that her publisher does not edit for content. This starts out as an interesting thriller, but too soon dives into an edition of Town & Country Magazine. I skipped through the chapter on "picking out dishes." Ther is also entire chapters on refurbished furniture. If you like trashy romance and lust, you'll like this book - and the recipes! GAWD I'm so glad to get my life back.1Loved it!!Warning- don't pick this book up unless you have a weekend to spend reading!! I was captured in the first chapter and had a hard time finding a place to quit for the evening. I loved the characters other than the ones you were supposed to hate. I had no problem getting into the storyline and staying involved. At times I wished for a slow stretch just so I could put it down and get something else accomplished. It never appeared. I bought the book and audio so I could read some of it at home then listen to the rest during a four hour road trip I had coming up. Well, as it turned out, I only had two hours left in the book by the time my trip started. While I was listening to "The Obsession" the miles flew by so the first of my trip was gone in a flash but the remaining half took forever. In my opinion you will not regret purchasing this book. The professional narration really helped to bring the characters to life. Great read!!!!5Best book ever! And that's saying alot since she is my favorite author.Five plus StarsIf you love romantic suspense, this is a novel for you. From start to finish, you can t put it down. It is dark. It is chilling. But it will thrill you. And a man knows your past nightmares and overlook them to bring you into the light is a man worth holding on to.No child should have to witness what Naomi did one stormy night in the woods of her rural West Virginia home. But it shows there is strength and goodness in tween when darkness is in her genes. The story is about her recovery and triumph over such dark events. But finding the good in other humans is never easy. There is darkness in more of our human friends than we can imagine. Unfortunately, none of us can run from darkness forever, and once it has touched your life, it never leaves you alone. It stalks her throughout her life. Naomi tries to evade the past and build a comfortable life, but inevitably the darkness finds her.Except for this time the darkness doesn t consider that Naomi has built a life around great friends, a lover, and a community that supports her; something she didn t have or understand she had that night in West Virginia. The evil that stalks her soon realizes she has grown stronger than he thought. Love always triumphs over evil, and strong heroin always wins.I read several disclaimers about this novel on Amazon. The story is dark. It gets into the mindset of a rapist, sadist, and murderer. For me, that was what made it more thrilling. You get to see both sides; the woman who can overcome the evil she is a part of, and the disturbed mind that can do such evil to women. If you are a woman who has experienced any type of violence against you, this story will show you can dig out of that dark pit and find love. The novel is also a great example of Third Person Omniscient Point of View. As a writer, I appreciate this. It helps me develop my writing by following Nora s example. Yes, Nora Roberts is my favorite author and mentor. I hope someday I can write a novel she would enjoy.5What a disappointment.Lots of hype. Mediocre plot. This book was on fire at the beginning. Then about one third through, it bogged down so badly I wasn't sure I could finish it. Descriptions of scenery, photos and landscaping can only keep you interested for so long. i really didn't like the main character very well and some important plot points were never revisited. The ending was mildly to moderately interesting. This was a pricey kindle book from a number one rated author. I definitely expected more.2The ObsessionNobody mixes light and shadow quite like Nora Roberts. The Obsession is a compelling story of the terrifying evil humans are capable of and the incredible strength, courage, and heart it takes to survive and thrive even after facing that darkness. The Obsession is a story that s easy to fall into, thanks in no small part to its heroine. Naomi went through hell as a child, discovering that her father was a serial rapist and murderer. We spend a significant amount of page time with Naomi in the past, seeing how her life changed because of her father s crimes. This is important, because it sets the stage for who Naomi becomes as an adult. She s strong, so incredibly strong, but the past hurts her, causing her to throw up walls right and left. Naomi has never fully healed from the traumas of her childhood because she tries to keep the past behind a firmly shut and locked door. What I loved about The Obsession was watching Naomi grow as a character. She comes alive over the course of the story and faces her demons to come out stronger. I ll also add that her love for photography is almost a story in itself, and watching Naomi work was one of my favorite things about this book. Her artist s eye is what makes Sunrise Cove irresistible to her, and that leads to Naomi putting down roots for the first time in her adult life. This move is the catalyst for her change, though the timely arrival of a lovable rescue dog and a handsome mechanic don t hurt.Xander is a classic Nora Roberts hero. He s a sexy, talented mechanic with a successful business, a good nature, a love of books, a protective instinct, and has good, solid roots in his hometown. In other words, he s irresistible. Somehow, even though Xander is pretty much the perfect guy, he never feels like a cardboard perfect hero. He takes one look at Naomi and is intrigued, and though she resists the idea of falling for him, it s pretty clear Naomi s fighting a losing battle. They fit one another like lock and key, and their smooth slide into love is by turns sweet and sensual. There s a solid thread of suspense that twines through The Obsession, rounding out the story well. The person obsessed with Naomi seemed obvious to me, but for me this doesn t significantly detract from the story because the heart and soul of the book is Naomi s personal journey. The romance and the danger were solid additions to this, as was the absolutely wonderful cast of supporting characters who charmed me from the very first page. Naomi s brother, her uncles, and the friends she makes keep this story light on its feet even when times are at their darkest. All in all, I found The Obsession to be an incredibly interesting read that I absolutely hated to put down.Trigger Warning: The Obsession contains scenes of violence against women from the perpetrator's point of view.KimberlyReview courtesy of Wit and Sin4What a way with words.Another amazing, suspenseful but not too scary listen (read?) from Ms. Roberts. Twelve-year-old Naomi Boze (Bose) unwittingly found a young woman bound and gagged in a root cellar and helped her to the police. Then her world unravelled as her father was imprisoned for the deaths of no less than 22 women. This story follows Naomi, now Carson, as she and her family struggle to survive their lives after this. An adult Naomi follows her profession in photography all over the world and finally attempts to settle in a small town in the northwest United States. Maybe she has found normal at last. Or has she. With a clear sense of setting, dialogue, just the right amount of stream-of-consciousness, and perfectly described characters, Ms. Roberts takes the reader (me, at least) on a ride of tension, compassion, small town values, romance and a serial killer's madness -- and she does this without my having to be thoroughly terrified or grossed out by the time I finish. BTW, the narrator does an outstanding job.5Good story, good readerGood story, good reader. There is a minor detail at the beginning of the book that bugs me every time I get to it, though - Naomi, as a child, is talking about the Sabine women in the Bible. That is SHAKESPEARE, not the Bible - it is a horrific incident in history, perpetrated by the ancient Romans, when they raped all the women in a rival tribe after pretending to want to make a peace treaty (also, by the way, why I absolutely hate the musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - they turn it into a cutesy song about "sobbin' women," as if rape is ok if you can make it cutesy, but I digress). Shakespeare wrote about it, but it is most definitely not in the Bible. It's not even inappropriate in the context of the book, and ultimately makes no difference to the plot, it's just mis-attributed. Anywho, it's kind of a pet peeve of mine when things like that happen in books, so thought I would mention it. Other than that, it's a good story. The ending is a little predictable, and it has themes the author returns to over and over in her work, but it didn't feel completely formulaic (like her books on magic and where they are fighting a demon or some other evil force - I can't stand those, and they are why I no longer automatically buy books by this author). Overall, very enjoyable.4Devoured this book in one sitting! I laughed, I cried, I sat in my car in a sketchy parking lot just to finish this book!I LOVED this book. It was just the right mix of romance, mystery and suspense. The author wrote with such beautiful imagery, I was transported to Sunrise Cove. I could not put this book down, so much so, I sat in the parking lot of a Sushi restaurant where I just had dinner and read in my truck for over an hour. I read at stoplights, I read in the bathroom, I read at work, I read until I finished the book in one day. Yes, I thought the Kindle price of $14.99 was steep, and I usually wait until the price drops but I splurged and am glad I did. This book re-ignited my love for reading. It was one of those books that you can see, smell and taste the descriptions. I do wish there would have been just a little more backstory to the father, maybe some insight as to why he committed the acts that he did, and I also guessed the copy cat killer as it was a little predictable, but overall I enjoyed the story and twists and turns. The character development was superb and I fell in love with Naomi, Xander, Kevin, Jenny, Loo, Lelo, Tag and most of all the Uncles. I really hope their is a sequel to this book.5
