Tracey Thorn's Holiday MixIf you are interested in the music of Tracey Thorn, then I am preaching to the choir. She has an instantly recognizable voice not unlike that of Karen Carpenter's. Both share an evocative mood which conjures up a certain sadness which suits their material so well. Some of the tracks involve her longtime partner Ben Watt and reminds me of some of EBTG's finest works, notably "Idlewild" which remains my favorite album by the group. The closest example is "Hard Candy Christmas" which I had never remember hearing but my wife reminded me that the song is from the musical "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". This album is not a typical XMAS album and if you want that, then there are plenty of artists who have done the traditional Holiday album thing. What you have here is a peerless vocalist with a fine choice of disparate songs arranged expertly with long term collaborators bringing back the early EBTG sound. If you liked Sarah McLachlan's XMAS album, "Wintersong" from a few years ago, then you know what kind of mood this album evokes. In short, you won't be disappointed.5PerfectionTinsel and Lights is a perfect companion for the season at hand. Tracey's smooth and familiar vocals provide both the comfort, joy and bittersweet element that some of the most memorable classics conjure up. I would be hard pressed to come up with a list of favorites as the entire album is perfect. "River", "Hard Candy Christmas" and "Maybe This Christmas" could be my top 3. Seriously, don't think about it just buy it if you ever liked Tracey or Everything But The Girl. You will not regret it.5Tinsel, Lights, Sadness, and PURE JOY!Hard to believe it took me a few years to hear this album. This is the perfect Christmas album for people who love the sweet sounds of Christmas music throughout the season. It is also the perfect Christmas album for the people who do not! If you love holiday music then it will evoke the ups and downs of the holiday season, but it also stands apart as a beautiful (mostly) piano driven album of make ups and break ups (i.e. Joni Mitchell 'Blue').All around a wonderful winter journey of both sadness and 'joy'. One of the greatest holiday albums of the last 20 years.5Simply Addictive...This album is a gem! I didn't even realize all the songs but two were covers, and I listen to a LOT of holiday music. I think it says much about Tracey's presentation. I particularly like her interpretation of Sufjan Stevens' "Sister Winter", and "Joy" is simply the standout of the record for me. There is not a bad track in this collection. Her take on "River" is evocative, emotive, and will bring a tear to the eye. My best holiday music find of 2012!5Mellow, beautiful winter holiday albumI love this album and can't stop playing it on repeat. If Joni Mitchell's River is your idea of a holiday song that matches your feelings of the season, this is the album for you. Nothing jangly or overdone. Just lovely songs, that flutter softly like the snow. Tracey Thorn's voice is gorgeous and she trusts it to put across a song without relying on vocal fireworks, tricks and ornate gingerbread decorations. In this season of rushing around and frenzy, this record provides a soothing contrast that fits the reality of the shortened days and long winter nights.5Beautiful!Played "Joy" on a loop nonstop! Beautiful music.5Quiet, wistful, gray and cream pastel portraits of a hopeful but lonely, world-wise voiceI get chills, repeatedly, from the start and throughout. Everything but the Girl leaps back to life in these quiet, wistful, gray and cream pastel portraits of a hopeful but lonely, world-wise voice. Simple, spare, mainly acoustic folk-pop settings vary, all placing her instantly recognizable and distinctive voice dominantly center stage. Most are high-quality, memorable songs. It includes only one standard; only a couple of treacly, seasonal, pop throw-aways.4My favorite of the seasonI was not familiar with Tracey Thorn. I bought this album on a whim. It was a good whim. This record is the perfect antidote when you are going crazy from hyperactive, twinkly, jingly Christmas music. It's like taking a short vacation to a quiet place. Tracey's voice is warm and soothing, the arrangements are understated and perfect. I particularly like the instrumentation on River. Someone decided a few years ago that this was a Christmas song, and now everyone has it on their holiday album. It's not an easy song to sing, and some artists fail to connect with the emotion of the song. Thorn hits just the right note of ruefulness, and the simple French horns in the background are poignant. The song choices are uniformly excellent. Most of the songs are not well known, although they have been recorded by other artists. The two original compositions, Joy and the title track, are little gems. Really, I am so thrilled with this album and so excited to discover Tracey Thorn's other music. Highly recommended.5Not the same old Christmas musicMy mom loves Christmas music, and she has just about every recording of the old standards available. I heard an interview with Tracey Thorn on NPR and decided to give this album to Mom to add to her collection. Thorn chose a more eclectic mix of songs than the typical Christmas standards (no Baby, It's Cold Outside or The Little Drummer Boy here!). Her cover of Hard Candy Christmas is excellent. I'd recommend this CD to anyone looking for a change from the typical Christmas music drone we have from Thanksgiving to New Year.4oh my friends I...return to sister winter...Tracey says...I'll run and you follow me. (smile)This is not so much Christmas songs but songs that speak to emotions that may come and find us at Christmas time. Let's be honest...do you remember that first Christmas you stayed alone in your apartment and didn't go home? Maybe you were on campus. Maybe working, or too broke to make the flight. What about the year that the Christmas feeling never found it's way into your heart and you staggered through the holiday like something precious had left you forever. ummm...maybe breaking up two weeks before the 25th and you sit staring at that bracelet you bought for the one you thought would always be in your life. Tracey...God she's sooooo on point, I cried on "Sister Winter" half way through when those jaggling guitars took me back to a snowy college town December 25 years ago. But it's Christmas time, a hopeful time. I summon the strength to push back the years like Mrs. Thorn recommends and in the face on darkness find a way to throw out JOY.4
