    Description

    Two years after his lauded work on John Sturges's sweeping Western THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN composer Elmer Bernstein created the music for TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD a 1962 film adaptation of Harper Lee's beloved literary classic. In contrast to the former movie's majestic sound Bernstein's score for MOCKINGBIRD (which won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Oscar) is appropriately subtle and nuanced with most tracks featuring delicate woodwind-and-string passages. The 'Main Title' is dreamy and pensive yet slightly foreboding at times expertly evoking the story's larger themes. Poignant pieces such as 'Remember Mama' and 'Jem's Discovery' successfully convey the film's emotional weight while more urgent songs ('Tree Treasure ' 'Assault in the Shadows') perfectly echo its most suspenseful moments.     heartbreakingly beautifulI have loved Elmer Berstein's score for this movie since I was a little boy and first saw it with my grandmother in Bryan, TX. Listening to this beautiful CD brought back so many memories. The very best.5DO NOT BUY THIS CHEAP RECORDING!29 minutes of music, of which track 5 is NOT from the film (it's a it jazzed up and has a CHORUS?!). I feel ripped off, but for $4.99 I'm not making the trip to the post office to return it. In addition, I had been disappointed in Elmer B. as a conductor previously, and this recording is limp-wristed throughout. The orchestra also sounds thin. My favorite recording, among the many I've heard, of this amazing, Academy-Award-winning music remains the original soundtrack. Don't know where that is available, but it must be, because it was released on vinyl. Bernstein's best, IMO, from an impressive list of wonderful movie scores. This is the music as it was recorded for use in the movie, I am told. As such, it is not identical to the vinyl LP version of the music I bought so many years ago (tempos are different, and fullness of sound is different). Perhaps only because I heard and listened to that version first, I still prefer that version. But this allows me to listen on my iphone/ipod and in my car and it was great to reconnect to this beautifully haunting and moving score.4Great Re-Recording by BernsteinThere are extended cues not even included in the film. This is not the original motion picture soundtrack despite the misleading title, but the music was re-recorded and conducted by Elmer Bernstein himself. In my opinion, this recording surpasses the quality of the originals, but others here disagree.
