Customer Reviews

After playing D3, this game is a gem at a fraction of the price. So yes! Hiss at me. I bought Diablo three inspite of what other people said about it. They swore it sucked. Well it turns out...for 60 bucks? It does suck. I got it cause a friend wanted to multi-game with me and I figured D3 was cheaper than WoW. After all the auction house drama and uneventful updates that made the game lag and bug out, I didn't want to play anymore. Came across Torchlight and wanted to play so I bought it. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ONLINE TO PLAY THIS? YAY! LOL Nice game. It's a hack and slack and it's a pretty good one. Very casual but intense sometimes if your armor ain't up to snuff. You'll be in trouble quick with the swarm of enemies. You can explore and explore and explore. Maybe that's all a girl really needs in life. Cut bad guys up and explore fell caverns for riches and weapons. The maps are somewhat crude but I don't care. I think the graphics are "Buldar's gate Dark Alliance" worthy. Love Buldar's Gate DA 1 and 2 by the way and I think Torchlight definitely holds a candle to them. The game really seems to take it's time, which I like. You don't feel like your being rushed through some intense story with neat cut scenes and fast play just to realize you didn't really have time to invest yourself in the story at all. *Diablo 3 Hint Hint* IF YOU'RE NOT REALLY DIGGING HOW THE GAME'S LAID OUT, you can edit it with the software you get with the disk. Literally. You get to MOD the game through software on the disk itself. How FREAKING COOL IS THAT? The only thing I didn't like about the game is: I wish I would have bought it before I bought D3. If you like hack and slash games, Stop debating and just buy it.5Just finished the main quest, but gameplay's not over!I'd heard good things about Torchlight especially in light of its sequel's release, so I decided to play through the first and then get the second. Having cost me single digits of dollars, this game has already provided me tons of entertainment. Totally worth it. Definitely going to get the second when its price drops a little bit too.The game is simple enough to be enjoyable amateurs, but complex enough to keep you interested and doesn't feel terribly repetitive (although some of the levels are clearly copied and re-skinned). Also, if you chose a moderate difficulty and think it's too easy as I did, fear not, for it does get harder and you really do need to start paying attention to stats, strategy, and tactics.Anyway, great game. Can't wait to play the second.5One amazing gameI originally played Torchlight as an Xbox 360 arcade game and loved it, so I decided to pick up a copy to play on my laptop. The graphics look much better than the 360 version and the game runs at 60-80FPS even when I'm in the middle of a fight with 30 enemies and spell effects are flying all over the creen. The laptop I'm playing on isn't anything particularly high performance, just a two year old Toshiba with an Intel core2 duo 2.8ghz, 8gb ram and a dedicated Radeon 1gb graphic card. The game offers three basic classes - a warrior, archer and mage, but you get to allocate your stat points and pick your skills, so you can end up with totally different versions of the classes that aren't even similar to play. The customization and random loot generation ala Diablo and the fact that each dungeon floor is completely random each time you play it means you'll find a lot of replay value from this game. Definitely a bargaino for $15-ish.If you like hack & slash action RPGs you'll love this game...if you're a fan of Diablo/Diable 2 or Dungeon Siege give this game a shot, the odds are you'll love it.5Bought this because I really like the Fate series of games and was hoping this ...Bought this because I really like the Fate series of games and was hoping this would be something new and updated. It's not. Basically it's the same game with different art. I also am disappointed in some changes to the game play (especially the fishing feature). I do like the way the gems and upgrades are handled. I think my review would have a higher rating if I had played this before the "Fate" games, but since they were first that didn't happen. If you have not played the "Fate" games yet then you will probably find Torchlight a really good game. I still prefer to play Fate and Fate the Undiscovered Lands more than Torchlight even though they are older.3Super Fun and Addictive!Don't let the cute characters on the box fool you - this is a fun and addictive single-player dungeon crawler in the vain of the Diablo series, which when you consider that it was made by some of the same people, that's to be expected. And relished. The game takes everything that was good about Diablo and Diablo 2 (random dungeons, killing monsters, loads of loot) and updates it into a visually stylish game that will keep you coming back to play for hours. The town of Torchlight sits atop deep catacomb of mines and ruined civilizations, but evil has spawned in the deeps below, and unless you venture down there to find it, the town will into collapse into the mine shaft and be lost forever more. Such is the plot of the game. There are three playable characters in the game: the Berserker (warrior), The Vanquisher (rogue/ranged), and the Alchemist (mage/magic). Each class has its own detailed talent tree of three specializations, so you can, for example, play your Vanquisher as pure Marksman (ranged) or go Rogue, or a bit of both - whatever you like. The addition of a companion pet (a dog, a cat, or a ferret) is something I really like. Not only does your pet wear saddle bags for extra loot storage, but with the click of a button, you can send your pet back to town to sell off excess loot for gold. This is a real time event, so be careful of mobs and bosses when you are left in the dungeon alone! In addition, your pet can wear with rings and neck items to boost their stats and skills (which are based off your character's), and be equipped with two magic spells. I currently have my Vanquisher and my pet both equipped with "Summon Zombies" spell, so when we both cast it, we have six little zombie helpers at a time. (Pets randomly cast their spells on their own.)The mod community is very active for this game, and the TorchED program is included on the game disc, if you feel like having a go at making your own dungeon and/or items. The game runs smooth as silk on my Windows 7 Pro (64-bit), although I did have a little trouble when not logged in as Administrator. There is also a netbook mode, which does make it playable on a netbook at the cost of graphical details. As of the time of this review, this boxed version is v1.3, but there is a patch to v1.5 available online for download. Also, unlike the downloaded version which requires a key, the boxed version has no DRM, and does not require (or even come with) a key, or require the DVD in your drive to play (a welcomed change! Thank you Runic Games for trusting your customers).Overall, while we're all waiting for Diablo 3 to arrive, if you're a fan of good dungeon crawlers, then Torchlight definitely fills a niche.5Great Game!I don't usually write many reviews...but this game deserves it. First of all, for the price...this is an excellent buy. I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought it, but I now realize what a gem this game truly is! I am playing it through for the third time...which speaks volumes for me. I won't elaborate on how it compares to Diablo 2 and such...others have already done that. What I can tell you is that even with the characters being somewhat cartoonish...the graphics are really amazing and the enhancements on the weapons truly makes this game shine (pun intended :)) Have your Destroyer or Vanquisher place a pistol in the left hand and and axe/sword/mace in the right hand and watch the mob fall! Blast them from afar then bash them when they get close.A heavy RPG game...this is not...pure hack & slash goodness(and great loot!) with different combinations to play your characters...it is!!! In today's busy times...this is a quick and delightful game to play!5This is the most fun game yet.... (review updated)Some reviewers compare this game to Diablo, and I suppose it is similar in many ways, however I found this game to be MUCH more fun than Diablo. It's really easy to play. I did not even have to open the documentation files. Also, it was easy to get the right patch, as that was part of the installation process, during the registration of the game. The game play is fun, and full of action. The really great thing is it is no strain at all on computer resources. You can probably play it on a net book with an atom processor, it's so computer friendly. Most of all, IT IS FUN to PLAY!Another bonus, once installed, you can put the CD away. I really loath having to dig out CD's and/or DVDs to play a game. After playing the game about 20 hours, it became boring, because it's extremely repetitive. Also, there are SO many items you find, that it becomes a challenge what to save. Eventually, I felt no longer interested in trying to manage all the game clutter of the items, as space is limited. The only thing that happens as you go further and further into the game, is the battles get a little more difficult, but winning a level has diminishing returns in feelings of accomplishments. What is really needed is some nice role playing and story development.4STILL a game you wantIt has a story line which is pretty linear, as most dungeon crawlers are... chase the bad guy until you catch him at the end. BUT it also has the ability to supply you with unlimited random generated mini-dungeons via a thing they call map scrolls. You get a pet, which when equipped with the proper trinkets can be a VERY companion. The shining light of this game is the ability to make modifications, or mods as they are called, which can change almost anything in the game. Add dungeons, monsters endlessly, armor, trinkets, etc. And if you search a bit online you can find a huge library of mods which are really must have.... I will recommend two as an example.. a texture mod and a mod called ember fiend... plug them into google and it will lead you to a huge library of mods. This game is a keeper and at this price.. you just cant go wrong.5Fun game with few flawsI just played this game for one night. The game play is a lot similar as Diablo with few improvement:1) Tons of storage, so looting is much easier, esp. when you can ask your pet to go back down to sell the stuff. I didn't use one single town portal in 3 hrs play.2) Easy to save, you come back whereever you exited earlier, and pick up exactly what you left before.3) Easy fast key, you just use 1-10, you can put anything in there from lotion to spell to attack.Problem is not trivial1) For whatever reason, my computer dies/freezes the first 5 times when I tried to install from the disk, make me wonder if I got a bad product. Eventually it froze again in the last bit of installation. So the installation is never completed. Of cause the executable is installed already (the log shows it also installed the "uninstallation part"), so I can still play. But I just don't know what is left out in this installation.2) After playing for 3 hrs, my character went to this awkard place (skirt of a rock or sth.) to pick up some stuff, then it's just stuck, I tried everything I can think of to rescue him out of that place, but no luck (then it occured to me the second good thing about leaveing and coming back whenever you want to actually created my problem here). So I end up having to giving up this character and create a new one. But this time, I will make sure he doesn't go anywhere seems that he might get stuck again! Wish they create a "stuck" button to instantly send my char back to town, sigh...3A straight forward and fun Dungeon CrawlerGreat price for a fun and addictive game. I play and own all the RPG style games and pretty much enjoy them all. This one is pretty straight forward in that there are no complex quests or long series of conversations. (Very reminiscent of Dungeon Siege) although not quite as good. Just crawling your way through lots of dungeons with lots and lots of baddies to bring down. There are points where you are literally assaulted by 50 or more monsters and you start unleashing all kinds of aoe spells and the fun really ratchets up. Fun to hit that kind of action and leave a mess behind where you just mop up by collecting all the gold, weapons and armor they dropped.Couple of nice things about this game are the amount of stuff you can collect. I really enjoy collecting armor, weapons, gems and what not. I enjoy looking it over and weighing the various enchants and stats to improve my character. And this game has the absolute most. There is a lot of it.You also get to tinker around with transmuting gems and other objects which is fun. As you collect up gems you can upgrade them in a string of upgrades to make them better and more effective. They give you various stats like +fire damage or health recovery. That's a nice aspect of the game.If you are looking for a dungeon crawler that is a lot of battling with only a basic story line then this game is for you.4
